Well, icefishing ended for me last weekend, so now I have to make the changeover to the open water.
I fished the South Branch of the Hoosic in Cheshire for about an hour this AM. Cloudy, windy, temps in the mid-to-upper 40's. I lost a small brown just below the Cheshire Lake dam, but caught a 14" rainbow about about 1/2 mile down stream from the Church Street bridge.
Early this PM, I tried my luck for a half hour on the North Branch of the Hoosic in North Adams, by the Natural Marble Bridge State Park, but the water was just too high. (It's a comparatively steep stream with lots of run off).
Oh well, win some, lose some.

I got out early today somewhere around 7:00am - 9:30am. Its kind of a busy day with a lot of non fishing things going on, so I needed to fit it in. Fishing was slow with only 1 taken to net. A 6"-8" wild brown. Other then it wasn't a stockie, it was nothing to brag about by any means, though its great getting out with a small success. On top of that, I finally got to try out my new Redington 9' 4pc 4wt classic trout model rod. Rod is pretty sweeeet! But its a start to hopefully a great fly fishing season 2013............Phil

Hoxie: What's the water condition in the South Branch in Cheshire/Adams? It was fast, but not too high. I would assume it has gone down by now.

I tried the West Housatonic in Pittsfield this AM.
Beautiful day - - blue skies, temps in low 60's, and water right about the level I like it.
It took a lot of wading, but I ended up connecting - - starting with a sunfish, then a 12" sucker, and finally a 12" brown and a 14" rainbow.
Next, I switched over to the East Housatonic in Dalton in the early PM, but didn't have as much luck, and ended up getting skunked.

What were you using on west housatonic river? A 1/3 of a nightcrawler. Today I tried the North Hoosic by the Natural Marble Bridge State Park and below the Eclipse Mill dam. The conditions were nearly ideal - - water levels were just the way I like it - - but I struck out. Although, to be fair, I was rushing a bit, and didn't get to spend as much time on the stream as I ordinarily would.

I found an excellent video on YT of a guy fishing the W Br of the Housy. He Czech nymphed about 200 yards of water and couldn't keep the fish off. He came tight on nearly every drift.

Same end resullt with one to the net. 12" cookie cutter stocked brown.

Mark, any links to that youtube clip? I searched quickly for it, but came up blank. I'd be interested in checking it out.

What were you using on west housatonic river? I fished between Clapp Park and the Greendale Road bridge. The two trout that I landed were caught about 2/3 or 3/4 of the way toward the bridge.

Yesterday AM, my buddy and I fished Cheshire Lake (1st Lake) on his boat.
He caught a couple small pike and a perch, while I landed a bunch of sunfish and a perch.
Yesterday PM, my buddy and I tried our luck on the South Branch of the Hoosic, from a little above Cheshire Harbor to about 1/2 mile below the Old Stone Mill.
I landed a 12" brown just below the Cheshire Harbor dam. My buddy tied into one there as well, but it got away.

I finally got out on Sun. I hit the Hoosic in N.P. and only caught one -- but what a one he was! Easily over 18" and the biggest fish I have caught in that stretch. He was just starting to develop a hook in the lower jaw. Incredible bronze color too. AgMD

I got out again yesterday in the same basic time frame as I have been. I got skunked @ the 1st area of the housi that I tried, but finished at the spot that good for a few. Brought 1 brown to net using a BH hares ear. Its been slow for trout on the fly, though the time of day that I'm going may have something to do with it??

Can you keep them to eat outta that section of the river. I always fished from the radio towers up and wade the river and have great results upper half. I do a lot of catch and release but I like to keep one here and there sometimes for a meal.

There are PCB's in both the North Branch (Readsboro to North Adams) and Main Branch (North Adams to the Hudson) of the Hoosic. The only branch safe to eat trout from is the South Branch (Cheshire Lake to North Adams).

[quote What about the pittsfield areas[/quote]
Oops, my bad, I thought you were asking about the Hoosic, not the Housatonic.
I am not as familiar with the Housatonic, but as far as I am aware, all of the branches of the Housatonic have PCB's.

So I decided to hit up the south west branch in Pittsfield today. I started by clap park and worked my way up to barker rd. I only got few small suckers. But saw a fish about 2 ft long in there. Couldn't tell what it was but never seen a fish that big before in that part of the river. But I did fish afternoon in lee and got a nice brown. Caught it on a streamer.

Skunked again!!! Did they stock??? (Seriously) Actually getting skunked is really no big thing to me, but I haven't really seen any action either. Almost everyday on my way home from work, I stop by some different C&R areas that I frequently fly fish to look and see if anything is rising, ect. These area of my interest are very popular spots for fly fishing by many & are historically well stocked. I have been fly fished these areas several times so far this year. I know its called fishing & not called catching, but the trout action & activity has been pretty slim & close to none.

Dry Fly Phil: Don't feel too bad. I was out on the Flats and below Thursday afternoon with a friend. Despite a moderately good sulpher hatch (invarias with a scattering of dorotheas), very few fish rose and few rose repeatedly. We did nothing with the appropriate nymphs, emergers or duns. It has to get better!

Did they stock??? (Seriously) Sunday conditions were ideal. Warm, overcast, some rain & nice bugs coming off the water. I'm guessing I fish a bit south of you, but can say stockers are aplenty. Crazy fun nymphing... IMG_1675 by scc4, on Flickr

I did stop & observe on my way to work yesterday morning, and they were rising. So I guess I need patience.

Is actually a video from a show called Berkshires Today or something like that. Some guy from Lee with a Russian name did the fishing. I found it a second time but didn't copy the address. You should find it if you search for the show name as above or something similar.
