Phil: For this time of year you should be pulling streamers in the morning and then looking for flies coming off in afternoon. Google "pink squirrel nymph" tie some up and give me' a go. They are a hot fly this time of year.

I fished the South Branch of the Hoosic for an hour and a half this afternoon, from a little ways above the Old Stone Mill down to Elm Rock.
The air was warm (89*) and the water was a bit high but the fishing was fairly good -- I landed a 10" brown and a 14" and a 16" rainbow.

I am partial to soft hackle wet flies. I tie them with breast hackle from local grouse. My favorite has a body of peacock herl although a body of yellow floss with a gold rib seems to work as well or better. I also make some with a body of green silk floss and a gold rib. These can work all year but seem best after the caddis have started. In a normal year I would expect to see some caddis by now -- but this is not a normal year. AgMD
