I fished the South Branch in Adams for an hour and a half this afternoon, and had a most enjoyable day out on the stream. Since my last two outings have been scounting expeditions further upstream, today I decided to go back to my old standby, from the Old Stone Mill to ALADCO. The weather was excellent (sunny and 77 degrees) and the results were rewarding. It started off slow. My first fish was just a 7 inch brown. But then I tied into a succession of larger rainbows. The first was 9 inches, the second was 11, and the last two (down by ALADCO) were both 15 inches long. The last fish gave me a heckuva fight - - In fact, it broke my rod. I've never had that happen to me before. I've broken my share of rods before of course, in all sorts of stupid ways - - in car doors, against the ground, in heavy brush. And I've also lost my share of fish when they broke my line. But I've never had one break my rod before. While I will bemoan the loss of my rod (a nice short 5 footer), the fact that I was able to land the fish softened the blow. Since I had just started fishing the headwaters of the ALADCO stretch when my equipment malfunction occurred, I strongly suspect that there are some more trout holed up downstream - - particularly in the last stretch before the stream enters the flood control chutes. So, whoever cares to play with some goodsize rainbows before the next heavy rain washes them downstream, you're cordially invited to try the stretch of the South Branch by ALADCO. Just be sure to leave some for me!
