Anyone ever get tired of catching too many fish?
I didn't think so.
October Mountain reservoir is a great spot to go for largemouth bass. They will readily take just about anything you can think of throwing at them. For those north county guys unfamiliar with October mountain you can find a map on the mass.gov website: www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/western/octm.htm. Unfortunately 99% of the fish are all small, around 12". I've been fishing the lake for many years now and I think they're just overpopulated and won't take much size.
The easiest spot to get in and out of is from Pittsfield Rd/Washington Mtn Rd. From Pittsfield, head out Williams Street until you get to Burgners Farm. Take a right onto Pitts Rd. When the road splits a hundred yards up or so be sure to stay to the right. Follow the road up to the top of the mountain and watch for the dirt road on your right. There's a small marker or monument under the tree on the corner of the road. If your not watching for it you'll pass by and end up in the town of Washington. Then just follow the dirt road until you come to the "four corners" and go straight through. You'll then want to take the second dirt road on your left, the one with the green gate.
You can also go up from New Lenox Rd in Lenox (very rough rd), or from Woods Pond in Lee (not as bad but need to go slow).
The state did a great job fixing the place up over that past few years. There are picnic tables spread throughout with fire pits for cooking and a nice little beach area for the kids. You'll need to bring a bathing suit to flycast as it's pretty shallow from the shore. You'll have the most success wading to about thigh deep and cast out. For those who bring the kids with a spinning or casting rod I recommend throwing rubber worms (5" Senko's) hooked through the center. Toss them out, let them settle, and slowly bring them in. I won't guarantee success, but they'll have a blast and 9 times out of 10, land a LOT of fish.
