Fished the Pike River near Kenosha, Wisconsin (1 hr. 15 min from my home). The King run this year is huge. Its the 4th year in the cycle and will get smaller for the next three years and be big again in 2009-2010 season.
Fished for 6 hours, legally hooked around a dozen fish (all Kings)and landed 8. Can't tell you how many I lined and wound up snagging until I got the fly size and split shot figured out in the deeper holes. Nothing like a snagged and pissed of King. Just point the rod tip at them when thy run and hopefully the fly pulls free.
Keep in mind that the Pike is about the size of the Hoosic where it runs under the bridge at Grove St. in Adams and the flows are about 1/3 that of the Hoosic. Lots of bends and deeper holes (3-4'). Found large pods of Kings with a few Coho and Steelies mixed in behind them ready to eat. Came across one stretch that had two hens redding right next to each other and that were at least 20 males sitting behind them in the deeper water waiting for their turn for sloppy 2nds, 3rds.... I spotted one beast male in the group that was pushing 40" and close to 30lbs. beating up and chasing the smaller fish around. I targeted him and must have made more than 100 drifts to this fish after he settled in spots. I finally hooked him on a #6 brown Wiggler. He tore downstream and ran into the shallow water at a sandy bank and he freaked when he felt his belly on the bottom and launched about 3 feet out of the water and landed in the bushes. Easiest landing job I ever had. Not my biggest King to date. That was a hen at #32 but by far my largest male.
All in all an awsome day on the water. Getting back out on Saturday.
Kings, Cohos, Steelies and Lake Run Browns between now and late November... Life is good.
