Just returned from an annual flyfishing trip I make every year with a friend of mine - fellow BFF Josh Roberts. We spent three days fishing the Ausable River and the Saranac River in the Lake Placid area upstate. Even with the rain off and on we had some great fishing. We usually catch a good mix of browns, brookies, and rainbows but this year just browns. Lunker fish for us (me) was a beautiful brown that went about 18". It had red in it like I've never seen in a brown. It had a reddish/violet color mixed in down the sides and into the tail. A bartender at one of our favorite post-fishing watering holes tells us that a lot of the native browns up there have a lot of red in them. Anyway, another great trip. I highly recommend the drive up to anyone looking to get out of here for a few days.

I use to get up there twice a year but I couldn't go fishing guess why? Yup Hockey tournaments for my nephew. What kind of coach would abandon the team to go fishing? Now that I retired from coaching I still can't get back up there!

Yeah, took a bunch of pictures. I'll have to get them posted soon. Caught everything on top water both morning and evening. Light Cahills, Sulfers, and Drakes for Mayfly's. Stoneflys, and HUGE Caddis hatches coming off throughout the day. The Caddis would have a tremendous hatch that would fill the river for about 20 minutes and then slow down for an hour and start again. Best luck was on elk hair caddis, stimulators, and ausable bombers. Pretty much anything big and scary and they would slam it. Heading back up today with the wife and kids for 10 days. Wifes family is from up there and we have two weddings to go to this weekend and next. Got about 12 family members from Ireland who love to drink over for one of the weddings. Things will be pretty wild but I will find time for hitting the river. I'll also be hitting the St Regis Wilderness Area for a four day canoe trip. They'll be eight of us all together. Never been to this area but it is supposed to be LOADED with native brookies so I'll be bringing my pole along to fish this as well. I'll post my fishing results when I return.........

Dana, When up with friends I camp at the Wilmington Notch state campground on rt 86 in Wilmington. It's nice because it's right on the Ausable so you don't have to go far to pick whatever stretch you'd like to hit. Hitting the back roads I can hit my favorite spots on the Saranac river in about 25-30 minutes.
I've never tried float tubing but "they" say that it's the way to go for fishing Brook trout up there. All of the ponds are loaded with them so maybe I'll have to try it out one of these times.

Got back last night. Fishing was great again up there. Fished the Saranac and the Ausable many times. Caught a good combination of browns, rainbows, and brookies throughout the trip. Again nothing huge, a few fish around 18", but most in the 12"-14" range-all with nice color. We ended up altering the canoe trip. We instead of the St Regis Wilderness Area we launched in Long Lake and went up the Raquette river into the Saranac Lake chain and then to the Saranac river. All said and done 50 miles in three days. Not much trout action during the trip a few small brook trout was it. We did catch a ton smallies throughout and a lot of pike in the Raquette. Many of the pike 36"+. Really nice trip with a lot of beutiful scenery and wildlife (loons, eagles, etc).

Just returned tonight from a few days fishing upstate. Hit the Ausable and the Saranac.
Went up on Wed morning really early. Fished the Ausable all day. Caught approx 25 trout throughout the day. Some rainbows but mostly browns around 8" with a mix of larger fish including my new best up there - a 22" rainbow.
Woke up and broke down my tent at 6:00 this morning to hit the river. Went to the Saranac until around noon. Not really counting but somewhere over a dozen. Browns, brookies, and rainbows. Hit the Ausable after lunch and fished until 6:00. Maybe another 12 fish, all browns and rainbows from 8" - 16".
Can't wait to get back up. Should be tagging along with the wife in early July, then heading up with Josh Roberts for a fall trip.

-Sounds like a great trip. I'd be interested in exploring the area. Can you suggest access points and places to camp? I already have NY license from salmon and steelhead. Please inform.
Is anyone interested in a 2-day trip?
Thanks, JLIBS

Josh,
We may be making a 2-3 day trip in the fall. We usually camp out at the Wilmington Notch campground. It's the cleanest, most well kept state campground I've ever stayed in. If you do a search on google or yahoo it will give you a number of other campgrounds and cabins in the area.
The fishing stays pretty good all through summer. My wife wants to take the kids up to visit family next month so I'll probably tag along to do some fishing. I'll post when I return from there.
Strbender - tough to find a better hockey town than Placid eh?
