6/8/07 Well two years ago I started catching small Largemouth Bass in the Hoosic, this year we're catching even bigger ones. Any one else catching largemouth in there?

No Bass caught yet but we've been getting a lot of big browns (19" - 27").

Friday I landed one 12 inch bass. The guy I was fishing with missed 3. Saturday I took a kayak out and saw 2 different spots with largemouth in it, one spot I saw the bass splash out of the water after a bug or something, the other I saw a few bass crashing in on a school of baitfish.
Two years ago I started catching a bunch of fingerlings in there. Around that same time another angler saw a school of fingerling bass up in the VT section.
It almost sounds like someone is doing some hand stocking.

As far as I know there has always been an odd bass or pike in the Hoosic. The water temperature gets pretty warm and there is an impoundment in in Pownal by the Tannery which would hold bass. I went to the Hoosic/Walloomsac/Battenkill Watershed Planning meeting last Thusrsday in Bennington and my impression is there would be little support for removing the Pownal dam which is a shame or should be a shame from a trout fisherman's point of view. Lots of contaminated sediments behind the dam, plus Vermont communites like dams regardles of the cost.

Yeah I've seen the occasional bass and pike in there before, but it's getting to the point where I can target the bass in there.
It would be nice to get that dam removed. Are you a member of the SWVT TU Chapter?

Yea, I'm a member of that chapter even though I don't live near there. I've found it to be an active chapter that has a lot on common with my agenda.
I find at the watershed meetings and in Vermont in general (but not always) there aren't that many angler voices out there. This seems to give dedicated anglers a good chance influence fisheries management.
Anyway, shoot me a private message if you're interested in talking about the Hoosic, Walloomsac or Battenkill. It would be nice to see more anglers at the meetings.
