Fished the Housy in Lenox from the New Lenox Road canoe launch down to Wood's Pond in The Dale. It's an annual fishing tourney that I do with a bunch of my buddies for bragging rights. We call it the "PCB Master's". Heaviest 5 fish creel wins it. We fish in pairs and this year was the first year that I actually won. My team, me and my friend Steve, had our top 5 weigh in at 16 pounds 3 ounces. Any species counts with the exception of carp.
Mostly pike and largemouth bass taken. My top fish was a 5.5 pound pike. Unfortunately I lost the best fish of the tourney that my fishing partner had caught.
Get a load of this. My bud Steve hooks into a huge pike. After fighting the fish and finally getting him close to the boat, his rod snaps in half. I don't know how, but I got the net around him before he could take off again. Two of our competitors, Josh and Jake, are behind us about 50 yards in another boat. I pull the fish out of the net and stand up with my thumb up its gill and the other hand around it's tail. We're hootin' and hollarin', and Josh snaps a few pics from the other boat, and then...........the fish starts thrashing. Since I didn't get to weigh it yet I tried not to let go. Wouldn't you know Steve is in the back still standing with the snapped pole in his hand and with all the shaking we go off balance and both lean to compensate in the other direction. You can guess what happened next. I'll have to post a pic of the two of us in the water. The fish didn't get weighed before we "released" it, but judging by the size compared to the 5 pounder, this one had to push double digets.
The fact that we still won, and ended up with a hilarious fishing story, took away the sting of losing the fish, my cell phone, my stogies, a just opened beer, and all of the food we packed for this outing.
Can't wait for next years tourney.
