I fished the West Housatonic near Clapp Park in Pittsfield for about an hour on Saturday.
Went fishless for most of the time, but caught a nice 13 inch brown and a skinny 10 inch rainbow in the last ten minutes.
Bonus - - I also got to see a great blue heron! Just my second this year.

Sounds like a great time. I've had a Great Blue Heron chasing me around the Hoosic for the last few day. He doesnt like me fishing in his spot, I was there first though. It's a little intimidating when you're wading in waist deep water and he's standing on a rock looking down at you.

Yeah, a big heron can be pretty intimidating. And, when they're in flight, . . . the way this big ungainly bird manages to stay in the air . . . it's almost like looking at a pterodactyl.

hoxie:
Were you fishing by the railroad overpass? Used to fish the pool there when I was a kid. An occasional trout and lots of perch. Good to hear that there are still some fish left there. The state stocks the river out West Housatonic Street in the spring but I haven't fished it in decades.

Yes, I was fishing on the "upper end" of the trestle, where there's a small "waterfall" and hole.
Everything downstream of that seemed relatively flat and generally shallow and slow moving, although I did catch a few small dace (and see the heron) down that way.

What a difference a month makes!
I tried fishing the West Housatonic by Clapp Park in Pittsfield for about a half hour this past Saturday.
The only "hit" I had (and fish I caught) was a 7 inch dace, and that was in the very same hole (by the trestle) where I caught a nice brown and rainbow just a month earlier.

I went fishing on the West Housatonic by Clapp Park yesterday for about a half an hour and caught a 9 inch perch and a 10 inch rainbow. I'm pleased because it's the first time I managed to catch a fish on a river (as opposed to a stream) since January.

jskowron take note:
Decided to give our old stomping grounds a try this morning. It's not what I remember and probably not what you would either. Went out by Hungerford street where way back when you could always catch a fish or two and found a slow moving, very warm, silty stream. Checked a couple of other spots and found them likewise and terribly overgrown. State still stocks it but it's unlikely trout can prosper there. If the bait fishers don't get them the stream conditions will.

Ctroy,
That's too bad you found int that way. Where on Hungerford St. were you? I spent a lot of time under the bridge right where Hungerford meets Lebanon Ave. I can't imagine that's silted, but you never know.

Was further down near West Housatonic Street. Used to be a good spot. Stopped by Cadwell Road but that's so grown over I passed it up.
