I was wondering what hatches people see come off the rivers in the berkshires.Do you see a good hendrickson hatch?March browns?Caddis? What might be your favorite hatch and on what river. Thanks for any replies.

Hi, In my experience, the Housatonic gets a good Hendrickson hatch if water conditions are right, and then excellent March Brown and Cahill emergences will follow with various caddis strewn in there as well. Last year I saw many Potamanthus spinnerfalls through June and Early July. It's matched by a # 10 Cream Variant or Usual. Deerfield mayfly hatches seem to have gotten less intense in the past few years. Who knows why? I have seen sparse Hendrickson and good Cahill hatches up there and very good Sulphur (Pale Evening Dun # 16-18) hatches. The bug that I'm really missing on the Deerfield is the big Green or Brown Drakes. I've seen decent spinnerfalls in the past, but not so much recently. Any cloudy, drizzly or cooler but not windy day should produce nice hatches and spinnerfalls of blue-winged-olives on the Deerfield, Hoosic, Westfield or Housatonic, but again this is not a given. I've seen phenomenal hatches of these little bugs on all four rivers Late Summer is a good time to watch for flying ant falls on all local streams. They range from a huge #14 black all the way down to #24 black and cinnamon. If the ants are on the water (and it won't last long) the trout will go ballistic, so be ready. At times, I've been fooled until it was almost too late because ants ride flush in the water and are dark so they're really hard to see. -Matt-
