I found these documents and thought they would be interesting to post. The picture is of two Browns caught in the Battenkill in Arlington VT on September 6, 1968. The big one is 20" and 3lbs, the small one 17" and 1.75 lbs. My father (the guy in the picture) took pictures of seemingly every trout he caught, using with him holding them up by the gills like this. He sent this picture to Orvis, and received the letter pictured below, along with the referenced pin that I shall now have to work hard to find.

That must be very special for you to have. I have my grandfathers WWII flight suits and bomber jackets, etc. I bet your photo and the letter would look nice framed together for your office with preservation glass and acid free matting. As we get older and it's harder for people close to us to think of good gifts to give on those special occassions, a little hinting might get this one done. If you find the pin and a likely used fly, they would look great on the matte or in a litle cut-out box.

That's just awesome!
What a small world, Bill Cairns (the guy that wrote that letter) is coming April for a casting class. Watching him cast is like watching Ted Williams swing the bat.

jskowron, Any chance you could forward me a scanned copy of that letter to show Bill Cairns? I think he'd get a kick out of it. Joe, interesting bit of Orvis/Cairns trivia ... any modern Orvis flyfishing catalog, which has a photograph of Bill casting (usually on the line page) will show him casting right-handed. The negatives have been flipped. Bill is left-handed ... and what a cannon! No doubt the result of his time as a minor league pitcher. Mike D. battenkill.tripod.com
