For the non-hunter, it can be difficult to get good deer hair for fly tying. Please learn from the best, Joe Overlock, as he sneaks up to this spike buck (after getting skunked on the Deerfield River fishing earlier in the day) to pluck a few hairs for one of his new patterns. Joe will be glad to share his stealth technique if asked. Note the tasty food offering in Joe's hand.

Joe still won’t admit that he carries around a bottle of doe urine in his pocket and uses it like aftershave when he goes into the woods…. That is a great picture though!
Last autumn I came into a huge supply of free moose hair for fly tying. Dear Ol’ Dad and I were bird hunting in Vermont when we noticed what looked like horse hoof prints and drag marks on the forest floor and obvious indications someone had used a saw to clear a path in certain spots. Curious, we followed the trail. Along the way we started to notice good-sized tufts of moose hair caught on the edges of rocks and logs along the drag path. They looked nice and clean, so I began to gather them up. We eventually found the fresh gut pile a couple of miles into the forest. Someone must have shot the moose and had a horse to help drag it out. I brought the hair home, zapped it in the microwave for a bit, and its been fine ever since. A couple of summers ago I found a huge decomposing moose carcass while trout fishing. Enough hair for 10 lifetimes, but it was way to nasty to collect….

And check out the level of intensity on his face.
It looks like he about to Jackie Chan the beast.

I've got a pretty good supply of deer hair now. Right after Josh took that picture I tackled that SOB.
