I'm glad to see there is a site where I can learn about the local water. Going to give fly fishing a try this year. I have some experience FF larger stuff, stripers/blues at the cape and salmon/steelhead on the SR. Not very good at it but the kids are getting older and the wife is getting sick of me hanging around the house She even bought me a Orvis LA battenkill (5-6wt). I also have a 6wt green mountain I found at a tag sale. I want to try the housy in the Glendale section. I've heard it is stocked, FF only and all CR which is fine with me. How soon in the spring we'll you guys start fishing it? I'm going to mess around and make some flies, any suggestions? Should be fun and can't wait to get wet.

Hey 6wt , welcome on board. Be sure to get to the meeting Jan 15th. The chance to hear from a world class bamboo maker is a rare treat, even if you don't fish bamboo -- yet. It will also give you a chance to meet w/ folks who fish the waters you are interested in. I usually fish in Vt and NY so I can't offer anything on South Berkshire waters. The two rods you mention, should do you well on any of the local waters. AgMD

Hey 6wt! Welcome! The Housy is pretty popular and you should do pretty good this spring. If you're looking to start fly tying you should start with a woolly bugger and work your way up from there. Mark did some great articles for the Berkshire Angler a while back (we've been neglecting it) and you should check those out too. Here's some help on the bugger: www.flyfisherman.com/Learn2Tie/woollybugger/As far as when should you start fishing, anytime is good. You can even fish it in the winter if you get a warm day. But the best time will be in the spring when they stock it. Have you picked up any good books on fly fishing yet?

I have a meeting on the 15th which may keep me from making it. Thanks for the link on the buggers. Yes I do want to learn how to tie and I have some experience. Mostly I attempted egg patterns/buggers for NY and some bunker patterns on the cape. Notice I said attempted . I think I want to learn on some of the larger waters, Housy and Deerfield, figure less frustration with more room. Should I be looking for something longer than the GM which is 8'? Might also hire a guide and heard about a guy named walt from Hatfield? Thanks again

Hey 6wt I am 15 to 20 min from the C&R area give me a shout if you want to go this spring. a couple of flies that work well in the spring are the Prince nymph, pheasant tail nymph in a size 12. there are many others but that should get you started. The Glendale area is a little more open but harder to wade becouse of the rocks. Hope this helps and you can always email me or call
good luck! Dean

Welcome.
Let us know when you're ready for the rivers. Many of us go in the cold.
We do highly suggest Walt Geryk in Hatfield, MA for guiding. He is excellent. Walt was very generous and put on a presentation for us at one of our monthly BCFF meetings recently. It was great. Please tell him we sat hello - Josh
