i would like to see a tying book organized by materials used..
for example - i have a friend who gave me a big bag of arctic fox - this cross ref would list all of the flies that use arctic fox..
any suggestions?

You won't find it. Because of the possibility of substituting materials on any given fly, the "sky is the limit" on variations. It may be possible to find something that gives the "original" recipe for a particular "class" of flies and as the creator(s) had intended them to be tied, but a publication on all uses for particular materials, not possible.
I own just about every pattern book that has been published in the last 15 years and while researching them before purchasing, I never came across anything remotely close to what you are looking for.

so it sounds like a retirement project for me in 2 years - the ultimate fly tiers database - type in your material - voila' - this is the fly (ies) for you! or maybe a computer saavy group of fly tiers - including a member who has about every pattern book that has been published in the last 15 years btw - got anything for artic fox? ??

I'll check it out over the next couple of day.
I know of some Smallmouth patterns where the original recipe calls for it.
Fox, because of it's movement in the water is often substituted for Kip and buck tail. Alot of the same properties as Rabbit. Can also be used to tie really fuzzy nymphs if you spin it in a dubbing loop.
