Are they a fly?...
The debate rages...
I purchased a bunch of the materials and tied some up over the weekend. They will most definitely catch fish. But are they a fly?
The only thread used is to tie off the head.
Be careful when using the materials. Super sticky and elastic. If you pull one side too tight when applying the other, it will cause it to curve.
They do look good when they're done...
I recommend the prismatic silver for the belly, green splash for the top portion of the back and mother of pearl for the body overlay. Keep them between 2 1/2 - 3" long.
The Smallies are going to love them...

shhhhhhh. secret weapon.
Gummi minnows are ridiculous if you can get a hold of some, I can usually find two sizes.
I say fly.

#4 and #2 seems to be the size that would work best. The proportion of the body needs to stay somewhat in line with the size of the hook and anything smaller wouldn't be feasible; unless you are fishing for 'gills.
The materials are a p.i.t.a. to work with, sticky, sticky, sticky...

It's easier for me to tie a married wing then it is for those gummy minnows. I can't "assemble" them worth a d**n. I've tried several times because they are great cheater patterns, I just suck at it.
Any tricks.
Btw, it is cheating. But I'm no purist.

Sorry Joe, I didn't see your recent post on this.
Slow and steady is the key. The stuff is like human fly-paper.
I also try to pre-cut the basic shape before applying so you don't have to work with so much material.
Another tip is to attach one side, fold over and attach the other. Don't try to sandwich the hook or other piece of material. It just doesn't work.
I have never cut apart so many "flies" as I did with this pattern until I got it down. I had to order more materials to make up for what I wasted while "practicing". I've got it down now. I can't wait to show them to the Smallies in a couple of weeks.

P.S. I can't believe how many times I have to modify my posts to correct "you" to make it "your". Must be a mental block kind of thing.
I don't tie up too many flies with married wings for the simple reason that they have married wings...

do you have any photos of the materials and the assembly process? i'd be curious. I almost bought one from orvis the other day when i was picking up a few bass flys. havent done any bass fly fishing yet but it looks like a blast. Smallies put up a heck of a fight.

Google search the materials and tying procedures. The process is too long to document here.
