I thought I would pass along this site after having a great experience.
For those of us serious tyers, who are looking for excellent deer hair for spinning, this is the place to go.
I'm sure that if you like tying hair bugs, you know Chris Helm. I'm my opinion he is the best hair bug tyer on the planet. This is his website. When you call to order you will talk to Chris personally who will take your order. While placing my order, we struck up a really nice conversation and I was really impressed with him.
I'm tired of tying with inferior deer hair. Even if I get a chance to check it out in a fly shop, its always marginal and I have to settle for the best of the lot which they have to offer. Chris is very particular about the materials that he provides to his customers and it shows in his work.
When talking with Chris I asked if he could go through his stock and pick out the best and longest hair in the colors that I wanted and that he could find, which he was more than willing to do. I also snapped the spool holder on my Rite Fly Mag bobbin the other night when trying to straighten the tube (my mistake, I sometimes zone out and don't pull straight down on the thread but at an angle and bent the tube). I ordered a new one from him but he also gave me the direct # to the President of Rite Fly for replacement parts and said that when I talked with him to give him his name and he could comp me the parts!
His on-line catalog is in PDF format, is extremely comprehensive and he stocks everything in it so his lead times are minimal. He has a store in his basement which is larger than most fly shops.
I have seen a number of Chris' videos, have met him at a couple of shows and now have spoken with him and I for one am going to support him rather than go the larger on-line players for my materials.
Here is the site address. I recommend to all that you support Chris. He is truly a master of the art...
