I'm a bit confused, please clarify.
Is the idea to tie a fly with the word "dun" in it or are we tying up dun patterns. The number of choices for the "dun" patterns is huge.

We are tying dun patterns... And I know the choices are huge... narrow it down to what you want to tie.... There are only a few Main stakes patterns just like any other grouping of flies if you know what i mean.... I guess just pick a dun pattern and go with it.... I clearly do not know as much about duns as Mark. LOL... I hope that clears it up eeeeeeesshhhhhh

flyfishgb:
Please don't think my message negative in any way, I didn't mean anything from my message except to clarify.
The reason I asked is that the term "dun" applies to mayflies only and refers to a particular stage in their life-cycle and in particular, to the color of their wings vs. when they are adults/spinners when the wings are become (more) transparent and in some cases change color from the "dun" stage.
Some swaps get rather creative and I could see us having to tie up flies that have "dun" in their title vs. dun patterns themselves.

I definitely don't take it in a negative way at allllllllll...... Actually its more learning for me . . . I am not as in touch with entomology as I should be.
Mark... Is it that hair wing dun / Comparadun misrepresent a true "dun" or do represent, Or are they different . . . I do want to do a "Dun" Swap...
If you want me to be honest i was looking through the Dave Hughes 30 Trout Flies, and Hairwing Dun / Comparadun were on back to back pages. So i figured that would be a good swap as they are very effective flies...
I am going to be tying a Baetis Coparadun most likely...

The use of "dun" in Compara"dun" and the like really refers to the fact that the wing color is closer to that of a dun than an adult/spinner. Most of the mayfly species when they molt from nymph to dun have opaque colored wings that range from light grey to dark or slate grey. A Comparadun would represent a fly in the Dun phase.
I would probably approach these swaps in categories such as: Classic Catskill Flies Swap Classic Trout Streamers Swap Foam Flies Swap Steelhead/Salmon Swap Smallmouth Fly Swap Terrestrials Swap Caddis Swap (Nymphs or Dries specified) Mayfly Swap ( " " " " ) Stonefly Swap ( " " " " ) Midge Swap ( " " " " )
Etc...
or you can get creative (like I mentioned in my earlier post) with swaps like:
Hair Wing Swap Feather Wing Swap Gotta Have Some Crystal Flash in the Fly Swap Early Winter Hatches Swap (EBSs, Tiny BWOs etc...) Mid Summer Swap Etc...
That way it keeps the options wide open and allows those tyers that specialize in certain types of flies or have their favorites to submit them. Alot of us have "go to" flies that they would like to share that deviate from the standard recipes and are very productive.
Another option is to follow how your typical fly pattern book is laid out by Species and style of tie to categorize the swap(s).
Hope this helps.

O.K. "hair wing duns" cover a pretty wide range of recipes.
While I'm tying tonite I'll think over what I want to submit. I will keep the species specific to the New England area.
Mark
By the way you mentioned that you have Hughe's 30 trout flies. If you want to sped a few bucks, purchase his "Trout Flies". It has a ton of patterns and their variations as well as alot of step by step instructions. he only draw back is that I thought they would do a little better job with the tying details of the flies that they took the photos of. Some are tied only marginally well.

Put me down for #14 Light Cahill Comparaduns. I'll leave the barbs on the hook for those of you who don't crunch them. (Like I did on the Streamer for the last swap).

How are the Flies coming along guys? Mine look alright, I need to work more on standing the hairs up more vertically. I bought a few sparkle duns from orvis to match. Otherwise I am real excited about these comparaduns!

Let me give you a tip on how to get the hair to stand up properly.
After binding down the butts, stand up the hair as you would to build the dam up in front but before you proceed to the front of the wing, wind the thread 2-3 times through the hair toward the head. It works quite nicely to get the hair to stand upright and at the proper angle.

Count me in! However, are there any patterns we can tie up for fall trout as opposed to smallies? Streamers? I'm open, but generally, I think smallies will hit all trout flies.
Just let me know the theme and I'll stop my whining and I'll start tying.

Streamers sounds good. Maybe We can call it a Crossover Streamer Swap - Trophy Bass/Trout Streamers?

What ever you decide if fine with me.
If we go Smallie or Cross-over put me down for the Murdich Minnow. This pattern is making the rounds through the Midwest right now and I've been hammering the Smallies on it.
