I let my kids (5 and 3 years old) design some flies tonight. I also let the 5 year old do most of the tying. I gave them options for type of fly (e.g. streamer vs. dry vs. wet) and material, but didn't really explain much abou what the options meant. The result were interested. The first fly is called the "Blue Neck" and was designed and tied (mostly) by my daughter Mia, age 5. (click for larger image) Pattern: Hook- Tiemco TMC800S Saltwater, size 2 Thread- 8/0 Chartreuse Tail- Pink Zonker Strip Body- Purple Zonker Strip, palmered forward Collar- Light Blue Saddle Eyes- Green/Black stick on Designer comments-"This would probably work good with rubber legs, too" The next pattern is the "3 Eyed Fly", designed by my son Julian, age 3, and tied by me (we don't trust him with the really sharp things yet) (click for larger image) Pattern: Hook- Mustad 3665A, 6X, size 10 Thread- 8/0 Red Butt- Red hackle fibers Body- Silver Prismatic Mylar Rib- Red Wire Underwing- Dark Blue Bucktail Overwing- Yellow saddle over Gold Saddle, tied in flat wing style Topping- 3 White Ostrich Herls Eyes- 3 Silver and Black prismatic stick on Designer Comments: "It has three eyes because I'm three" I'm going to keep the originals, but I plan to tie up some copies and trie to catch something- maybe a pike on the Zonker pattern and bass on the streamer. Whatever- it was fun and it gives the kids a chance to get involved.
