"duane" from the other forum is known for his salmon and steelhead flies, the guy has an amazing talent. he might be worth dropping a line to. here is his website; www.vigsbigflys.com/wish i could help, never fished steelhead though, let alone tie any steely flies. wouldn't any forage fish imitatator be successful? like smelt patterns and the like...

Those are nice. I'm a big fan of that Art of Angling Journal, too bad they're not making them anymore. I might try a few smelt patterns.

Joe, When are you going? I have 5 patterns that I find to be my go to fly's for Great Lake Steelhead. See pictures at www.fishincane.com/FlyTying.aspxFall - Double Blue Egg, Single Pink Egg, and Flesh Fly Winter - Montana Stone, Light blue Rusher Stone Spring - Single Pink Egg By far my most effective pattern is the Montana,

I was on your site earlier looking for those pics but only found your fly box pictures. I'll have to tie some of those up. What size are those stoneflies? These are what I tied up already. My varient of the Steelhead Stinger. I was trying to remember what it looked like from memory when I was up at Orvis getting materials. I tied up 5 of these just cause I liked them. Stonefly Egg pattern that Jeremy turned me on to. He gave me one of these and I landed my first Steelhead after about 15 minutes. I don't know when we're going. We where talking about heading up to Bill Davis' camp sometime within the next 2 weeks.

The last pattern you showed is typically considered a "sucker spawn" pattern which is fished late March/early April when the suckers come into spawn at the tail end of the Steelhead run.
Try tying the pattern up in Steelhead orange and pink. It's pretty effective. I've caught about a half dozen Chromers on the orange color.
One of the benefits of this fly is that the loops catch on the fish's teeth, providing for more hookups.
The 2nd pattern is really close to a "Roller Stone". Also try tying it up with a blue thorax. Its a pretty effective color.
It looks like you substituted yarn or dubbing for the body on the Stinger. Nice job. Really flat and even.

I didn't glue the eyes shut either, Mark!
I was trying to remember the tie for your Steelhead stinger when I had you on the phone. They didn't have any orange dubbing though, so I just used floss. Also I thought the wing was orange, not white.
