O.K. Joe go ahead and tell the story. I'm not in the area to have to face these guys during one of the meetings and maybe by the time I get back out there people will have forgotten about it... Be kind to me... Mark

Last spring I took Mark out in the Hoosic and we floated the stretch from Brayton Hill down to West's Liquors. Now for those of you that have never met Mark, he's a big guy. He used to compete in Mr. Muscle competitions. I think he posed for a calendar once too. So between the two of us the canoe is riding a little low Now I grew up playing with canoes at fish pond and kind of took it for granted that most people aren't real comfortable in a canoe, you really have to capsize one a few times to get a good feel for one. So as soon as Mark got in the canoe I could tell he was a little uncomfortable, especially being seated in the front. The river was up a little and the ride was a little bumpy for him, which just made it worst. At the end of our drift we had to cross some fast water to get to the shore so my plan was to ram the canoe into the bank as hard as possible, let the current bring the canoe around, and let Mark jump out while I held her. Well as soon as we rammed that shore Mark figured he had enough of this carnival ride and jumped out of that canoe like a rocket, landed both feet on dry ground, and sent me and the canoe tumbling in the fast current with my waders on. He felt pretty embarrassed, I felt pretty cold, and the canoe felt pretty heavy with all that water in it. So... not a funny story, but there ya go. I wish I could of told it better. Maybe next time I'll make something up. To top it off we didn't catch a thing back there...

About 25 years or so back, I was living on Barbers Pond in Pownal. It was the third week in April and colder than a well diggers belt buckle. .A buddy and I were out on the pond before sunrise, and we were dressed as warm as we could -- long johns and heavy wool hunting coats. We were in an OLD Grumman canoe, which had been customized ( bent) by a previous owner. The bottom was a bit bowl shaped and she was a little tippy. I was tying something on to the end of my line and looked up to see that the horizon was quickly moving toward the vertical. When we went in, the water was up to our necks and the black pond ooze was over our knees -- and we never hit solid bottom. As we pushed the swamped canoe towards shore all the gear , 2 tackle boxes, 4 rods, nets, cushions, paddles ,etc wanted to float away. Keeping it all together made a cold, slow trip even slower. We managed to make it the 30 or so yards to shore. The water was cold, but we didn't know what cold was till we stepped out of the water -- D@^^ it was cold, and we still had to empty the canoe and paddle like hell for the far shore. Out of all the "stuff" we had in the canoe, only one rod was lost, and I dove for that once the weather got warmer. It looked like it had never gotten wet. That is not why I hate canoes. I hate canoes because I fish the Battenkill. AgMD

ok, i feel much better now knowing all that i just wasn't sure if it was one of those things where some dink paddled over your line or something... still a good story though. joe you just need to work on your creative writing skills. throw in stuff like "cold as a well diggers belt buckle" that's what makes the story!

Now now boys, lets not go dumping on Joe. When he gets as close to geezerdom as I am , He will be at least as colorful as I am. That is probably not a good thing, so we should treat him w/ kindness. ;D AgMD
