Exploring her new home at this very moment, I have at my feet a very precocious new predator who will be stalking the partridge and woodcock of the Berkshires and Green Mountains come October. I have high hopes she’ll perform well in the field once she comes of age. So, without further ado, I give you Piper. I need to figure out how to teach her to sit patiently while I fish....

My pup will be 1 in May. I was hoping he would be my fishing partner starting this year. Don't think it will work out quite yet. He's a black lab that has acquired the name black tornato.....

I can't take my dog fishing either, she loves swimming to much. That's a cute pup though, you'll have to post some action photo's from the field.

Shaun:
Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner.
That is one great looking pup you got there! I'm sure you've begun training it already. I've heard its important that you start when they are really young.
Also, just a reminder. I'll be in N. Adams from 6/8 thru 6/12. Fishing every day/all day.

Had a blast this Memorial Day Weekend with the pup. Spent it at the Old Homestead. On Saturday, Dear Ol’ Dad and I took her for a walk along a forest road in the Green Mountains, and she ran, romped, swam, and made us laugh. When we got back to the house, the War Department surprised Piper with a nice dog bed to replace the ratty towel she’s been using to lounge on to date, and Piper immediately latched onto it as her very own. The Old Homestead was bustling with people staying there for the holiday weekend, and all evening Piper had my niece climbing all over her, wrestled with her, and generally gave as good as she got. She loved it! Sunday was my day with Piper; just the two of us. Early in the morning, before most of the world was awake, the two of us went to the cemetery where I visited my beloved grandfather’s grave for the first time since the funeral more than a year ago. It’s amazing how puppy kisses on salty tears make things a little better…. Then we went for a hike in the “big woods,” one of my favorite places in all the world. It’s muddy, buggy, thick forest, brimming with birds, brookies, beavers, bobcats, bears, moose, etc. It was one of those hot, still days, where the forest is largely silent, except for the hum of the insects around you. We took it slow in the heat, and Piper investigated as many muddy, fetid swamps as she could.
