Hello Uplander, I am from Berkshire County, grew-up in North Adams and now live with my lovely wife in Adams. I have been fly fishing for many years. Mostly with wintershope-Paul he got me started in the sport. Would like to have him whacked for getting me addicted to fly fishing.Enjoy every second I can be on a river any river fishing. Maybe I will run into you some place if I have not already.

My name is David. I'm from Guilford, Vt about a half mile from the MA border. I work in Greenfield, MA. I went to UMASS as an undergraduate and worked for the fisheries Coop as well as MA state fish and wildlife at that time. Got to do a lot of gill netting and electrofishing in VT and MA which is the fastest way to get sick of fish and a good way to get elecrocuted. Thanks for the welcome.

Did you get hit by the probes? One of our members that works for the State was telling me a good story about an EPO that got zapped in the river.

Usually if the elecrocuting occured if a fish was stuck in a root or a rock. We couldn't scoop it with a net. So in that situation you would say "hands" and folks would stop shocking. Sometimes one of the shockers would "accidentally" give a little zap. I never fell in while a couple of probes were on. I've heard of people who have done the mackerel dance.

Frequest visitor to the NW corner of MA... When I was a kid, all the hotels, motels, bars, and restaurants in the Berkshires would hang out “Hunter’s Welcome” signs come Autumn. Haven’t seen that in years…. Interesting you come west to deer hunt Jason. Most guys out east stay out east as the deer herd is actually bigger ‘round suburbia than in the grown up Berkshire forests. Nothing a little selective, sustainable logging wouldn’t cure…. What turned you onto the Berkshires?

Thanks for the warm welcome. Well, I grew up in a hunting and fishing family, and was born and raised in Worcester MA before moving after high school. When I was a kid, my father frequenlty took us to VT, the CT River valley, and the Berkshires to hunt grouse, woodcock, and later deer. By the mid- late 80's, VT deer # was down so we hunted the Berks mostly. Later my brother got a camp in Otis and recently we got another camp in Chester near the Berkshire/Hamden County borders. So I have spent allot of time out there and love it. I too remember the days when you could not get a hotel room in Great Barrington or Pittsfield during the first few days of deer season. Now there is deer statewise and the hunters are less in number and more spread out. I did do some hunting in cetral and eatern MA, but preffer the Berkshire terrian (hills especially). Plus it has the most public land. And with all the guys hunting central & eastern MA, I can hunt the Berks with allot of room. Hunting in MA has really changed in the past 25 years. But yeah, some covers can use some habitat work including some logging. Berk forests are mature mostly and that keeps low density. I was able to get my first MA deer in a while in Williamstown this year though Mostly I go to the Berks/ South VT to hike and fish though...

Welcome new members! -Josh Liberman here. Hello jf5, I moved to Great Barrington in the Berkshires (s.w. corenr) with my wife 4 years ago from Beacon Hill. I'm from Newton and would frequent The Sunset Bar and Grill, The Last Drop, etc. I used to fish the Charles River, all of the beaches from North to South to the Cape and Islands for Stripers and Blues and some of the ponds west like Whites, Walden, etc. for Trout. Yes, there's a lot of public land out here for hunting compared to East, but still not that much, and there are definitely more dear East (this is not another opportunity for Joe to pick on my hunting skills). A really good thing about southern berkshires is all of the access to so many different types of water so close.

LOL, I live in Allston, so the Sunset B & G is walking distnce from my condo!! Love the ribs (and the beer of course). I occasionally fish the Charles, but stopped fishing WHites and Walden years ago because of various reasons. I'd rather drive a little and fish Wachusett Res, and the related watershed. As for deer... There are more deer east I agree. But I find way more acceptance as a hunter in the Berks and way more public lands. Especially if you combine western CT river valley and Berks there is so many WMA's and State Parks lands. Used to hunt Scheffield way back. Got my first deer/buck there. That town had allot fo deer then (late 80's). Still see allot there and in towns like Egremont, but usually on private lands. Do you hunt deer in the Berks or central/eastern MA??

Yes, i do hunt out here. -Some public land and some private land. The best hunting in the area is in Sheffield and Egremont in Southern Berkshire County.
As for the Sunset B & G. I grew up eating the "all you can eat" ribs with my family, and the nachos and many ofthe hundreds of beers as I got older.
As forthe Wachussett Res. I went to Clark University in Worcester but did not spend much time there. In college, I did fish, but on the Quabog. I have read several On The Water magazing articles on the Wachussett res. that I have clipped and saved. The trout and salmon fishing is said to be superb. The articles I have tell right where to go and when. -Someday....

Joe, the lake trout fishing at Wachusett is great. It can be tough shorefishing but there are too many lakers (come harvest them) so there is always a decent chance to get a few. The scenery is fantastic. No boats, and lots of water. Plenty of deer (no hunting) and birds of prey, other wildlife too. My favorite place to fish in MA! Salmon fishing is a bit tougher, but I usually get one or two from the lake. The fall they run the tribs and thats when you have the best chances. You really should fish it sometime, April, May and Nov are best for togue.
I really miss hunting Sheffield and the southern Berks. Been trying to get on private lands in Sheffield, Egremont and Alford but no luck. Do you hunt Jug End at all, or Mt Washingtion SP?? How bad are the crowds??

Hello. My name is Jeff. I grew up in Pittsfield across the street from the SW branch of the Housy, and my family still lives in Dalton/Hinsdale. I left the Berkshires in 1987, spending time in Central PA (unfortunately, I didn't fish back then- I was right in the heart of spring creek country), and ending up in Northampton. I moved to RI in 1999, and started a family. Last Summer, 2005, my wife and I decided that we wanted our kids to grow up in Western Mass. We just moved back a few months ago, and now live in Northampton. In the past, I locally fished mainly the Westfield, as well as small streams and ponds. My wife's family has a camp way up in New Hampshire, on a pond filled with smallmouth, down the road from the Androscoggin and upper Connecticut Rivers. I hope to do some exploring in Berkshire county this season.

Hello from Ludlow MA
Dana Charbonneau signing in, not a Berkshire dweller, but love the area.
I fish the Deerfield more than the rivers closer to home - the Swift, Ware, Westfield and Quabog. It's a haul, and not without faults, but I just love it.
Spent a lot of time last year putting together a photo tour of access points, not sure when I'll get it online.
Looking forward to getting to know he Hoosatonic this year. Also enjoy the Buckhorn Rendezvous traditional archery shoot in Stockbridge.
And yes, I'm that opinionated guy who used to write for "Into The Outdoors"...

And yes, I'm that opinionated guy who used to write for "Into The Outdoors"... I read that all the time. I usually pick up a copy down at Dave's Pioneer Vally Sporting Goods. I was reading a good article in there a few months ago about Connecticut creating "Trout Parks" for kids and such. It started giving me ideas... ;D

No Joe, I don’t think you do…. Into the Outdoors is no longer published. Fred Andrews, the fellow that ran it, passed away a couple of years ago, and Into The Outdoors died with him. It was a Western Mass centered sporting newspaper. I believe Dana stopped writing for it a little before it ended…. I bet you’re thinking of Outdoors Magazine, a Vermont-centric publication.

It's Woods & Water I was thinking about. "Outdoors Magazine" is the other one I couldn't remember though. Sorry guys.....
