Normally I’d be cross-country skiing or snowshoeing to carry me through the “off season,” but not with the weather this year….
So, I’m passing the time reading seed catalogues. The War Department and I just bought, and moved into, our first house this past year. It was too late to plant a garden when we moved in, but this year I’m gonna’ be ready!
There is a flat, sunny section of backyard that is currently wide open, giving me a little less than a ¼ acre that’s well-suited for a garden.
I’ve got grand plans for the usual standbys: tomatoes, lettuce, beans, beets, carrots, peas, cucumbers, and squash. I’m also going to try asparagus, potatoes, and Brussels sprouts, and stick in a few rhubarb plants for good measure.
Then there is a nice edge piece of the yard where I’m planning to try to create a nice raspberry/black raspberry patch, and a strawberry patch. Of course, there will be a few blueberry bushes, and I’m going to try a couple of lingonberry bushes alongside them.
Finally, there will be a mix of annual and perennial flowers scattered around the yard.
Any other gardeners out there with advice, stories, or suggestions for interesting plantings?
