I was in Shelborne Falls today and read the sign noting that what is now known as "the potholes" was once called "salmon falls" by the settlers and natives and was the site of a treaty between the Mohawk and another tribe allowing for fishing within a certain distance of the falls. So, were there actually salmon in the Deerfield or is it a case of mistaken identity ??
