Andy, I have ordered materials through anglersworkshop.com and Hook and Hackle (www.hookhack.com). I have also gone to Cotes in Leicester, MA. He has a great little shop with a wonderful selection of rod building supplies. It's literally a "down home" operation with the rod building section of the shop in his garage, and the fishing/tying section in his basement (be sure to wave to his wife as you pass the kitchen on the way down stairs. His web site is www.cotesflyshop.biz and he does mail- and phone-order as well. Jeff

I have had excellent experience w/ Anglers Workshop and recommend them highly. Only downside is they are not really into Bamboo. Still -- cork is cork and a reel seat is a reel seat. H&H -- I did business w/ H&H for nearly 15 years. I no longer do business w/ them and have asked them to take me off their mailing and e-mail lists. Cabela's -- Call them up and ask for the rod building cat. or check out their site on line. Golden Witch -- a bit pricey but they do bamboo. High quality components, quite a few choices in ferrules. One of the best sources for Rod Bling. Only an on line cat. worth a look. Excellent to do business over the phone -- you have questions -- they not only have answers but they have good answers. Guides -- If you are going w/ traditional snake guides I recommend " Snake Brand" guides. You will need to Google for a vendor. In my experience they are the ONLY supplier that knows how to shape the feet. Usually their guides are good to use right out of the box, although I do sometimes touch them up a bit. Every other snake guide supplier delivers snakes w/ feet of uneven length, poorly ground, often burned from high speed grinding. They all need extensive re working to undo what the manufacturer has messed up and too often they have ground away so much that there is not enough to work with. Snake Brand guides are the most expensive ones out there but they are cheap at twice the price. They also have some really nice agate strippers. Golden Witch does too. Silk is traditional Nylon is excellent (Orvis has used Nylon since WWII) Either one will change color when you varnish it. Silk tends to become more translucent. Whichever you choose -- Make some test wraps on a dowel or pencil or something and see what it looks like when you varnish it. You may choose to use Color Preservative. Test first. Choosing color-- hard to tell color over the net or in a cat. If you have a particular color in your minds eye -- consider buying a few spools of different colors that are in the neighborhood of what you have in mind. Postage for one spool at a time can be expensive. Keep us posted and don't hesitate to ask questions. AgMD

Hi Andy,
I use H and H, but their mailing service and customer service is pretty questionable and I have to call them back several times. However, they have a very good cork grip for $12 that you can't beat anywhere for the price.
I would get the guides from Snake Brand. All of the feet come pre ground so no fussing with a file is necessary to get them right. They cost 50 cents more than others, but the extra $5 total is well worth it. You can get the other stuff from anglers workshop, and they may even resell snake brand guides.
All of the info I have gathered is from the many experts in this BCFF club and they have all been right on the money, especially Kim, Jim, Dan, Mark and occassionally Jeff (Jeff can be annoying). Keep posting and asking and you'll get the answers you need from them.
JLIBS
