I've just removed the ferrules from an old south bend rod. The six sections of cane under one fo the ferrules are separating. Should I glue these back together before remounting the ferrule, ore will the epoxy for attaching the ferrule take care of it. If I need to reglue, should I use wood glue and bind it with thread until dry? Its only splitting for about 1 inch, ending about 1/4 inch up from where the end of the ferrule wil be.
thank for any advice,
Jeff

Yes -- fix it. Easy to do. Using razor blades, xacto blades etc. GENTLY pry open the split , but only as far as it wants to go. Just enough to open it as far as the glue has failed and no more. Hold the splits open with sewing pins and butter in some Titebond II. ( no nasty solvents, easy to use , easy clean up , easy to get, and some folks are using it to bind up new bamboo blanks) I use a small knife blade and force the glue into the splits. Pull the pins. Bind with a cotton cord ( less stretch than synthetics). The string you used to get at the local bakery is about right, Heavy carpet thread is light but works . Start about 1/2 inch bellow the splits and wrap upward like you would a guide foot , but not so neat and fussy. Wipe down with a wet rag. After it is cured , strip the string , sand/scrape the excess glue. You might find that the bamboo is now too big for the ferrule. Sand as needed using care to keep things round and centered. That is it. AgMD
