Did anybody catch the FFA espisode that profiled the 4 guys that formed Sweetgrass Rods (the breakaways from Winston)?
I saw it this past weekend.
They have a 2 year backlog of orders!
Didn't get into the details of rod making but profiled the makers pretty nicely.

I caught that show a few months back. They sure are living the life...
Even though they didn't get into rodmaking details as a rodmaker I saw enough that got me thinking... I rebuilt my binder system based on seeing theirs. Also I was surprised to see them heat treat a large batch of sections together regardless of their placement in a rod which is an indication they don't build their rod's using sections from the same culm, they mix and match sections from different culms.

You know I noticed that too. Even though my knowledge of bamboo rod making is limited, I too thought that a rod should be built from the same piece of material if not for any other reason than for consistency of the properties.
You're right, they sure are living the life. Sure didn't look like they were pushing too hard to get rods out the door...

just a thought... perhaps it's the inconsistancy in individual sections that make for a more consistant rod. i would imagine that all the sections cut from a single shaft of bamboo would have all the same points of greater strength and flex and node placement. by combining sections from different peices of bamboo with all different placement of these stronger points you would end up with a complete rod with more consistant strength and flex throughout it's length... perhaps. but i really don't know.
i too have seen that episode and really like the zen philosiphy those guys have.
being a snowboarder myself, i took particular interest in "the new guy" whose background was in snowboard construction (which just so happens to have a great deal in common with rod building i guess... who'da thunk it?!?!)

I saw the show last sunday. Where do you sign up. It looked like alot of R and D on the river and some rod making in between. It's always great to see the people that put there heart and sole into a major corporation break off and do there own thing and make it work. I'll be interested in seeing in a couple of years if they still have a 2 year waiting list. As much as I love quality work, I don't know if I would wait 2 years for a rod or would go somewere else.
