Any advice on what to use for arbours for fitting a new real seat to an old bamboo rod? I've seen reference to everything from masking tape to reamed out graphite cylinders.

I use masking tape. I have rods over 20 years old with the reel seat glued this way and they are still on nice and tight...

Thanks for the reply. Masking tape sure sounds easier.
The rod I'm refurbishing actuall has some kind of hardwood arbour for the old reel seat the fits the new one. It's been there for 60 years and seems like I'd have to chip or whittle it off. I'm thinking I'll just clean it with some mineral spirits to get off any residue or grime, and then just put the new seat over that ("shimming" with masking tape as necessary). Anybody see any problem with that?
Thanks, Jeff

There was an extensive thread on this , on another board. Lots of folks seemed to think that masking tape was the way to go. I agree but-- The crepe backing on masking tape is high acid, cellulose paper which is prone to self destruction over time. With this in mind I only count on the tape as a centering tool. I use only two or three rings of tape, and I will usually split the tape w/ a razor so that my arbors are only 1/2 inch wide. Once the epoxy has set the tape arbors serve no further purpose and probably are weaker than the epoxy bond. I have started using U-40's Rod Bond which mixes up to a consistency of tooth paste. ( and has an incredibly long cure time --- long cure time means more and longer polymer links which means stronger bonds) The added viscosity allows the epoxy to fill the gap between the blank and the seat and does not settle out before it cures. The idea is that once the epoxy cures, the tape is unneeded and it can decompose in 50 years or so ( which it will). The seat and the blank will continue to be permanently bonded by a series of rings of epoxy. Well -- that is the theory. So far I haven't waited 50+ years to see if I am right -- but I am working on it . AgMD
