I have a lot of Local stands of bamboo in the woods around my house, some of the stalks are 10-15ft tall and very thick.... How can i tell which pieces of bamboo to harvest. They seem like they would be perfect for rod building. I will get some photos...

Nearly any bamboo can be made into a fishing rod. But unless your backyard happens to be in a very small region of China, the bamboo is not likely to be the best variety for traditional split cane rod building. Still, lots of folks have tried it. What you are looking for is a culm which is 2 inches or better at the base. ( bigger really is better)Large spaces between nodes. When cut, you need to look at the depth of power fibers. Usually domestic cane is enormously inferior to Tonkin cane on all of these counts. During the decades of trade embargo w/ China, it was impossible to get Tonkin cane in the US, a few manufacturers got by on dwindling stocks of "pre-embargo" cane. There were many attempts to grow Tonkin cane in the US, and an extensive worldwide search for a replacement. All for nought. But then --- there is guy in Argentina who is producing rods from local cane and his rods are getting some rave reviews. AgMD
