Any suggestions on how best to remove a reel seat from an old bamboo rod?
I'm restoring an old one and wondering if I should keep the old reel seat or replace it with something better.

Soak it in hot water for about 15 minutes (hot water in a bucket). That should heat it up enought to losten up the glue so you can pull it off.
If it's a classic rod then I would leave the old reel seat on otherwise a new reel seat to allow you to fish with it would be ok.

I have never intentionally removed a reel seat, but from what i understand the hot water trick is the only way short of carving it off. I have heard that some have had success ( and some have not) by wraping the seat in a plastic bag and then imersing it in the hot water. It could be that the heat is what does the job -- at least sometimes. Look for pins. Some are obvious, but like the pins on ferules some can be polished right into the seat or cap. If you find one, drive it in just enough to clear the metal. AgMD
