Joe -- Re; our conversation on planing forms. Consider using a ballbearing as a bearing surface inside the the form for the adjustment screw to ride on. Just small enough to fit into the hole. I understand it tends to even out motion if the end of the bolt is not perfectly dead flat and reduces friction particularly if you use the smallest bit of lithium grease. Not shure where I read this , maybe the Penrose site, but it sounds like it might be a good idea. AgMD

I'm having trouble visualizing this. I'm not sure where the BB comes into play.
BTW, I'm pricing out my tools right now and getting ready to start ordering stuff. Jim gave me a 6' clum at the meeting Wednesday night and I just flamed it last night.

In some versions of the push-pull forms the only the form nearest the bolt head is tapped, the hole in other form is a blind hole and of a size to take the bolt and threads w/o interference. the BB is dropped into that blind hole so that the bolt, when it pushes the form bar is bearing on the BB and not just the bottom of the blind hole. Joe,
How did you do on the spliting? The fun part starts now as you have to press the nodes and streighten the strips to prepare them for rough planing. Not fun......

As much as I want to start the splitting I'm holding off until I get tooled up. I picked up another book yesterday "Handcrafting Bamboo Fly Rods" by Wayne Cattanach. I think that was the second book that you recommended, Jim. I couldn't find the post you made.
I've been pricing out my tools and stuff for the last few days. I've gone from buying a $250 tool package from Wagner down to $60 - $80 by using Amazon.com
I'm still teetering on whether to buy or build my steel forms. Wayne Cattanach's book does a pretty good job describing how to build your forms and so does Thomas Penrose's site. On one side I just want to start building, and on the other I can save around $275 - $300 by making them.

Joe,
Whats on your list of items to get? You have a lot of work to do until you actually need the metal planing forms. Do you have access to a table saw and drill press? If so you can easily build some rough planing forms.

The rough forms I'm ordering from Wagner. They're only $40.
