I just found this press release from Orvis.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ORVIS TO OFFER “LOST” SUPPLY OF
WES JORDAN BAMBOO FLY RODS
Discovery Coincides With 150th Anniversary of Orvis
MANCHESTER, Vermont (September, 1st, 2005) – To celebrate the 150th
anniversary of Orvis, the nation’s oldest mail-order business, the company will sell 50 Wes
Jordan bamboo fly rods to lucky owners in 2006. The commemorative rods will be
introduced at the Fly- Fishing Retailer trade expo, Sept. 8, in Denver.
The rod blanks were found while cleaning warehouse space need Orvis’ original
Union Street rod shop, in Manchester, Vermont. Jordan’s apprentice, Ron White, himself
an accomplished rod-maker with a 37-year career, has undertaken the task of creating the
limited edition Wes Jordan rods, which will go on sale in dramatic fashion in early 2006.
Number 1 of 50 Limited Edition Original Wes Jordan Anniversary bamboo rods will be
presented to one lucky angler in a special ceremony early in 2006. Numbers 2 – 49 will be
sold to the general public at a price reflective of this rare opportunity.
Wes Jordan changed the fly rod market completely in 1950 with the development
of an impregnated bamboo rod that retained strength and made rods waterproof (Patent
Application No. 2,532,814, serial number 662,086.) Today Orvis’ uses thermoplastictoughened
resins to impart toughness and strength in a process that shares conceptual
parallels with Wes Jordan’s original concept.
The two-piece bamboo rods measure 7-feet 6-inches and are made of Tonkin
cane. They feature signature varnish coated rose wraps, burnished snake guides, an agatelined
stripping guide, an Ambonia wood spacer, hand-engraved nickel silver reel seat and
ferrules, the 150th Anniversary logo on the reel seal butt, and each rod is hand numbered
by Ron White. The rods and reels come with fabric covered, felt lined boxes with brass
fittings and leather trim and include a certificate signed by rod maker and Wes Jordan
apprentice, Ron White.
