Spent a few hours on the Battenkill in NY on 4/16. Water is still a bit high but fishable. Bottle green color but you could see the bottom in 4 foot of water. Water temp mid afternoon was 50*. Some caddis and SMALL mayflies ( PMDs?), tho not a lot. Spoke to a local worm fisherman who said that no one has caught anything since the rain the day after the NY season opened( April 1st). Still it was nice to stand waist deep in the river, and I got to try out two cane rods that I rebuilt last winter. One is an 8' 3/2 Monty that I rebuilt for my son. Nice crisp action and throws a 6 wt DT nicely. The other is a H-I Canada Creek, impregnated but varnished, 8 1/2 ' 3/2. I think I am gonna like this rod a lot. The action is a bit slower but it still throws nice tight loops. It's casting style seems to match my own. So although there were no fish to be had, it was a good day on the water. Based on past history I would expect the fish to turn on in 2 or 3 weeks. It has been a long wait. AgMD
