Now don't lie! The Deerfield has been the topic of many heated debates because of the daily water releases from the dam. So, what's the best day you have ever had on the Deerfield?

I haven't fished the Deerfield since 2000 when I was visiting family. It was early June and we had spent the morning fishing the Swift at the Y(Had a GREAT morning, including a 5lb Landlock). It started slowing down and was getting crowded so we decided to try the Deerfield as I hadn't fished it in close to 30 years. What a homecoming! Fished the pool below the bridge at Bardswells. Let me tell you that the river never fished that well back in the 60's! But then I've picked up a little more experience since then, and it does make a differance. Of cource the fish they stocked back then were quite a bit smaller. The best fish I ever took back then was an 18" holdover. The first fish I caught on my return trip was an 18"! And I picked up several more besides that one. Started out nymphing as the river was up a bit, but they dropped the flows a little later in the evening and I switched to dries. What fun! Using mostly downstream floats, I nailed fish after fish. Some of these fish required most of the line line off the reel to reach them. These were fish that I never would have been able to reach back in my early years on the river. I probably caught close to two dozen fish that evening,in the 12-18" range. Best day I've ever had on the Deerfield. Its funny, I had been wondering for years what it would be like to go back and fish the Deerfield, knowing what I know now. Some times you can go back and its even better than you ever dreamed of!

I had 4 on a cold day in early spring on my spinning rig. I was using a red rooster tail. Of course this was before the white water rides and tube'ers. When the water level was low and yu could walk out to the holes.

Riverkeeper,
When you say the jailbird is that refering to the fly or the inventor of the fly? I had a disagreement with the "so called" inventor a few weeks back. I always remember a version of the fly tied a different way (early 1980's) than is now published in a recent book.
