just got a bargain at ll bean outlet - 5 wt sink tip line
do i buy the spare spool for the 3/4 wt reel or the 5/6 wt reel?
i've heard rumors that people actually do use the heavier wt line on the lighter tackle if they are using unweighted nymphs with rapid sink tip line....
pros or cons?

The big question is -- does it fit the 3/4 reel? It might, being sink tip it probably has a smaller dia. and if it is WF then the long thinner running portion will help but it will depend on the reel. If the reel is a tight fit w/ 4 wt line then a 5 wt might not fit. I would strip the existing line off the 3/4 reel and try the fit first -- before I bought the spare spool. AgMD

Over and Under lining has more to do with the action of the rod. With most graphite rods being as fast or "faster" you may want to overline the rod to take advantage of its speed.
The rule of thumb is to over/under line 1 line wt but on 8wt and higher you may go with 2 line weights. Its amazing how much line you can get in the air with a 5 wt. fast action rod rigged with a 6 wt. line.
As for an extra spool, I personally am a proponent of the idea. I have at least one extra spool for every reel I own spooled with a sink tip or full sinking line. If I'm out for Smallies with my 5 or 8 wt. I throw the extra spools in the back of the vest. I typically start our with the sink tip or full sink line and it never fails that a nice caddis hatch will start in late afternoon or Smallies start eating Hoppers and I switch out. Better to be safe than sorry.
Remember that reels on 4 wt and below are pretty much only line holders and the drag system is not important.
Now that I say that you'll come tight on a 5lb. Brown on your next outing with your 4wt and cuss me the whole time...
