Hello BCFF,
I'm in need of a new floating 5-weight line. What is the best line out there for the money? (high float, good distance casting and durability for Berkshire fishing)
What taper do you recommend? I have used weight forward, but I know many people use double tapers.

I'm partial to Scientific Anglers with the AST (?) coating but at the price of new lines these days I wouldn't call any thing a bargain.

Value is another one of those interesting words. Long term, bang for your buck, silk can be an excellent choice. Taken care of, a silk line can last decades. They cast something awsom, delicate presentation, and cut through a wind rather nice. The downside is they cost $150 and up. But still, at that price if I can get a few decades out of it, I'm $$ ahead. In plastic I have found Cortlands 333 and 44 lines to be an excellent choice and for a reasonable price. BTW I will bring a 6 wt DT silk to the Bamboo meeting. AgMD

I've never seen the value of the high priced lines. I tend to go for the mid priced ones, my favorite being the Orvis Silver Label. I fish them hard with no maintenence during the year. At the end of each season I condition them using a line conditioner in perperation for the next year. I usually get 2 to 3 seasons use out of them.
