I just came across your website by accident as I was searching for info on Chesterfield Gorge as I've never fished there and I'm always looking for a good hike.
Nice site Joe & co. I hope you don't mind a New Yorker (Troy) joining. To make a long story short, my two son's and I fish for everything that swims but flyfishing is my #1 passion and we're strickly C&R on all trout. My 15 year-old has really taken to it and we hit your Berkshire waters frequently. I used to fish all over but with gas prices and sports (one kid's a college baseball player and my young guy is a HS/AAU basketball player) I can't go west, north, or south as much as I used to so we head a short drive east to find some excellent opportunities.
My 15-year old son and I are easily distingished by our sawed-off hockey sticks we use as wading staffs. If you see us, say hello.
Joe, I'll hook up with you on a contribution as we're in the Adams area often during the season.
Good Luck this coming season, Bart

Thanks for the welcome Mark. I'm experiencing a monster case of cabin fever and I guess I'm just looking for some other souls to share in my misery right now. This latest blast of snow didn't help much.
As far as fly tying, even though I've been tying for 30 years I'd hardly call myself an expert but tying over the winter helps with that fever. I'm teaching my kid now which is enjoyable. I'm always looking for new flies or tips.
Checked out that site on realistic flies - that tyer, (or should I say artist) has some impressive work.

Sorry bartman, I must have looked at the wrong screen name when I posted that message to bearsdenbill. I should have addressed it to you.
That guy's work is incredible isn't it... I'd love to know the man-hours he spends on one of those patterns...

no - my favorite bearsden is right here in royalston/athol on the millers river. a fabulous stretch of catch and release - tons of holdover browns - very little pressure - and home to paul rezendes - nature photog and tracking instructor in years past.
don't mind painting an idyllic picture because i'm happy to share the spot with like-minded students of the trout & fly - and have been know to give up the honey hole to visitors - just to share the experience...

Bearsden- I might have to take you up on that. I've been meaning to hit the Millers. It's not too far for me, but I've never quite figured out where exactly to go.

Wonder how it would work on the Deerfield?

jscowron - the millers picks up right after the 1st of may - especially since we float stock the c&r with the help of the harrison bros who regularly float/guide the deerfield.
if you would like the precise date of stocking - pm me and i would be happy to give you the tour.....

Hey guys, thanks for signing up. Bartman, do you fish the shad run on the Hudson? Thanks Joe, Yes we do, I have a boat and I'm 10 minutes from the federal dam in Troy. Early May they stack up below the dam and are pretty easy to catch on a fly rod. Hard fighters in the current. My kids prefer to fish for those jumbo stripers but I usually fish for them well below Albany. The best fly fishing for stripers is actually in June (and again in the fall) for schoolies that stick around after the run. You can find them in the tribs. When the trout rivers warm up in the summner we fly fish the upper Hudson for smallies in our kayaks. We can really get into the nooks and crannies with the yaks and the fishing can be great. It's nice having this river close to home. Bart

Bartman,
I've only fished the Hudson for shad once and it was pretty fun. I'm looking forward to this year's run.

WildGuide, thanks for joining. Bartman, I've only fished the Hudson for shad once and it was pretty fun. I'm looking forward to this year's run. Joe, Just a head's up on the Hudson shad. NY recently passed emergency regs that make recreational shad "catch and release" only this season. I don't keep the critters but I know some like the row. There are some recent reports of herring in the Catskill area so the shad won't be far behind. Bart

Well, this seem as appropriate a place as any to say hello. New member here as well. Conway, MA resident...I can walk to the Deerfield from my house without crossing a road, in about 5 minutes. ;D
So yeah, anyway, hello fellow WMass fly fishers!!
Cheers, Jason
