After a little more final planing and sanding, I'll be ready for gluing of my strips of my 1st bamboo project. The rod is a 7'5" 5 wt.
I'm planning on using this set up on a regular basis. What traditional looking/feeling reel would be appropriate?

Oh Boy! Choice of a reel, like rod jewelry is dictated by aesthetic taste and willingness to spend $$$. For my own taste there are no reels currently made that look right -- except for some retro styled high end offerings. The good news is anything you could ask for is available on e-Bay, and currently prices for reels on e-bay are at a seasonal low. On the low end the Meisselbach Rainbow 627 or 631 are cast alloy, non adjustable clicker and go for $10 --$15. Lots of folks like the older Pfluegler Medalist models, I don't like their looks, but that is just my taste. For a reel ;D retro look you could go for something like this cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Montague-Beaverkill-Brass-Fly-Fishing-Reel_W0QQitemZ140177047404QQihZ004QQcategoryZ36177QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemOne caution --some of the older reels have longer feet than modern reels and may not fit all the new seats. If you want to go w/ quality -- it is hard to beat Hardy. I like the Marquis, Perfect, and Bougle reels but most of the out of production Hardys look good and all are quality. The Princess, LRH, Featherweight all look good. Another caution -- not all the old reels can be used "Right Hand Wind". Until the post war era most folks cast right hand and then switched hands to wind. I find I have no problem winding w/ the right hand but the left hand still has to learn what to do w/ the rod when I have a fish on. For my taste you can't do better for looks or quality than a Hardy Perfect or Bougle ( The Bougle is basically a raised pillar Perfect) unless you go for something like a Bogdan or such , but that is some real big $$$$. Perfects can be had for $300 and up while the Bougles are $500 to $550 or so. Poke around e-Bay and see what might matches your taste. If you are going to the meeting next week I will bring a fist full of old reels for you to look at and if you bring your new stick ( or at least the seat) we can determine if the older reel feet will fit. I even have some new toys to brag on. AgMD

There are also the Ocean City reels, though I believe they are all RHW. AgMD

AGMD and FlyManDan, Please bring your toys to the meeting Monday night for show n' tell. I'd be very interested in seeing the reels and the comparative sizes. I'm out here in San Fran. now for the week and I was hoping to be able to see the famous Fly Casting Club in Golden Gate Park, but of course, work is getting in the way of doing such things as usual...One of our other BCFF members made a post of this place a year or two ago. I think our January speaker, Per Brandin, famous Bamboo rod maker, was a member back in the day when he lived out here. orbitvisual.proboards31.com/index.cgiwww.ggacc.org/JLIBS

I expect to be there and will bring a bag full of toys. Amongst them will be what I believe to be the e-Bay deal of a lifetime. I promise you --- you will not believe it. Bring your reel seat and hardware so that we can try out some of the older reels. AgMD
