go to this website. This is the site for Schmidt Outfitters in Wellston, Mi. I know Ray and most of his guides up there and I will tell you that these guys are the best that you will find anywhere. Because the "profile" of Michigan Salmon and Steelhead fishing is so close to that which you will find on the Salmon River, I want you guys to check out the patterns page. Pay particular attention to the Antron Bug (both versions), the Steelhead Bugger which imitates the Petronarcys Black Stone as well as the caddis larvae (green rock worm). These three flies are proven producers and I can't tell you how many S & S I have caught on these three patterns alone. Here is the link: www.schmidtoutfitters.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=266Also, go to this link for a pattern called Bear's Headbanger Hex. It is similar to the "hot butt" Antron Bug shown on the patterns page. Its quite a bit more difficult to tie than the Antron Bug but is worth the time. I tied up about a dozen last night. Last year I caught around 20 Kings in a 6 hr. span of time with the Hex. Just don't tie it on the TMC200R as the recipe calls for. I tie mine on a sz. 6, TMC5263. Its strong enough to handle the toads. The beauty of this fly is that it incorporate what looks like a natural food source along with the well proven egg pattern. Steelhead orange and Roe are the two colors I use in the butt with great results. There is also a version tied in all black with a chartreuse butt. www.flyfisherman.com/ftb/ffmbeststeel/index.htmlMark

Jeremy turned me onto a pattern for steelhead that resembles the "Blood Dot" on that second link. Works REAL good! As for that first link, if you take that purple bugger and tie a pink egg to the front, you get the famous "Liberman Skull Crusher" aka "the hat pin. You also need some real human blood on the fly to make the pattern complete. ;D That said... I don't know if I'm going to be able to make the Salmon River this year. My 8 day fishing trip to Costa Rica this November might burn up all my fishing vouchers with my wife!

I personally hate fishing egg flies, even though I know some guys swear by them. If I fish an egg pattern its usually a "scrambled egg" type pattern because I can control the depth much better.
Joe, as for Costa Rica, isn't that warm water fishing???...
Just go further South to Argentina where men are men and sheep are nervous and fish for some sea run Browns that dwarf the Great Lakes Browns!!!
Take plenty of pics. I'm sure Peacock's will be on your "to-do" list.
I'm pissed because my Canada trip was cancelled this year. I'll sure be missing the Esox up there...

I don't think there are Peacock Bass where we'll be fishing. Check out Crocodile Bay Resort www.crocodilebay.com. If the fishing sucks, I can get a massage and pedicure. Free booze too! I'm aiming for Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, Roosterfish, Tuna, and Wahoo. I might bring a 6 wt. and try the local streams that no one fishes just to see what they hold. Everyone fishes the salt down there. I'm going to try to take some video while we're down there. We can only bring 30lbs of personal luggage on the plane so I'll be pretty limited.
