For people that are not familiar with the area and that need more info, please email me at joshliberman@hotmail.com directly. We'll be sending an email to people shortly as a reminder with this same info.
2007 Deerfield River Outing Date: Saturday July 21st 2007 Time: 8:00am Place: Upper C&R parking area below Fife Brook Dam
Come join fellow BCFF members for a day of fly fishing on the beautiful Deerfield River. The fishing itinerary is subject to the scheduled water release from the dam but if all goes well the plan is to fish up river early morning, down river late morning, then back up river for the rest of the day. Pack a lunch for an afternoon group break and discussion of "the one that got away".

OK. I know how to get to the catch and release area by the fife brook dam, but I don't know any of the road names. Many folks have been asking for specific directions.
1. Can someone please reply with specific directions from Rt. 2 or some other easy to find landmark/road?
If you are thinking about joining us, please reply and post if you will or will not be joining us so we can have an idea of how many fly fishers to expect and so we can wait for everyone before hitting the water. So far, about a dozen people have emailed me saying they'll be joining us.
2. Please reply here if you're thinking about joining us (even if you've already contacted me). Thanks.
Best regards, JLIBS

I'll try to be there, but most likely only to observe. I'll have my kids with me. No need to wait for me. We'll find you.

Directions to Upper C&A Area
From North Adams: Route 2 to Whicomb Hill Road (first left past Whitcomb Sumit Motel). Whitcomb Hill Road is a steep 2-3 mile descent. Left on to River Road. (See directions from river road to upper C&R below)
From Greenfield: Route 2 to Zoar Road (just past Zoar Outdoor and just before Mohawk Camprround). Take Zoar road to River Road. (See directions from river road to upper C&R below)
River Road to Upper C&R River Road boarders the Deerfield. Take it past the Hoosic Tunnel (crosses RR tracks). From Hoosic Tunnel it's about 1 mile to turn off to C&R parking. I'ts a slight right hand turn and there is a sign that states fishing access.

Dean, I know how to get around up there. You can come with me if you like. I was also there this past Wed.
Dress for warm air and cold water. I wear heavy socks and often long underwear. -JLIBS

This is my first post to the forum. I recently met Josh on the Green River on Hurlburt Rd. and he "hooked me" on joining the club. I'm excited to participate.
I hope to attend the Deerfield outing but need more specific instructions. I live on Long Island, NY, but have history in Great Barrington, Stockbridge, Lenox.
Can anyone tell me approx. drive time from Barrington? Also, directions to Rte. 2? What town are we meeting in?
Thanks for any input you can provide. Looking forward to meeting all.
Ken

Oldmanriva,
I'm a fellow long islander too. There are many ways up, It depends if you want to go directly to the fishing or if you want to go through the berkshires to get there....

flyfishgb, you've seen the kinds of friends I roll with. Bring your British guests... Mark, I've seen the Seinfeld episode and I wet-waded last night with Jeff Skowron on the Green River. I'm comfortable with shrinkage, but the Deerfield gets cold if you're in the water a long time. Ken (oldmanriver), it's 1hr and 20min from GB. 7 North to 8 North to some side roads I can tell you about if you call me to get to Rt 2. Then the above directions are good. The town is Florida, MA You are welcome to possibly car pool or follow early Sat. am.

You have to understand that with Jlibs any water over a foot and a half is up to his waste, plus he frequently falls in, so it's all pretty much wet wading. I'd see him in a "pool" up ahead up to his chest, only to find that it came up to my knees. No shrinkage here.

jskowron:
As the Dog would say..."Ka-Blam!" (re: jlibs) and I need more info on the British chick-a-dees.
Man I wish I could get there for the outing but the wife is travelling for work. I'm thinking about getting there in a few weeks though. When I firm things up, I'll post a general message with an invite to wet a line with me.

Regrets that I will not be amongst you. But as I carefully ply the anglers art on the unsuspecting trout of the Battenkill, I will stop for a moment to think of you, flailing the water to a froth, falling in, hooking yourselves and having one hell of a good time! Keep on rockin' AgMD

So, how was the outing on the Deerfield? Any pics?
I was coming up to watch with my kids, but only made it about half way there when I got the "my tummy feels kind of weird" from my daughter. Having been barfed on by my son last weekend and not feeling like going through that again, we turned around. Made it to a block from the house before the fun started- fortunately I had the foresight to pick up a trash bag for her to use. Hope you all had fun.

O.K., the report...
I am planning to send a recap email along with the club's next guest speaker/meeting info for Sept. later this week. I'll give the report now per 2 requests anyway.
We had 6-members show up early on Sat. am at the C&R section of the Deerfield. Several members emailed me directly expressing their interest, but they had previous commitments. -Next time.
The day looked promising with the comfortable air temps and blue skies. However, the dam water release that was scheduled for noon (which would mean good slow-flow fishing until 3:00pm) came at 9:00am. The groups of innertube floaters and boaters with coolers of beer and floating trash on the river kind of changed the feel once the water was released. Nonetheless, Dean entertained us as usual with his humor and his son Kyle enjoyed being out on the water with the BCFF company.
As for the first hour, Jim and Ken each landed trout. Nice work, Gents. It was frustrating for the rest of us since there were fish rising all around us, even within a rods length away. The bugs coming off the water were significantly smaller than the size 24 and 26 midges I ties up in several varieties in anticipation of this outing to be used with 7x tippet. Nothing seemed to work except for my efficiency and repetition of creating severe wind knots in my 3-nymph rig. Tom McGuane could probably whip up some witty literary response to make me laugh, but it was still a pain to have to re-tie everything from scratch so many times. We've all been there.
Keep your eyes open for an email from me about the next meeting for Sept.
JLIBS

Not one to take credit when it's not due, I am sorry to say the only trout I caught the weekend of the Deerfield outing were 2 Brown in the West Branch of the Croton River, in Westchester, NY on Friday on the way up to the Berkshires. I couldn't coax even a nibble from the dozens of risers in the Deerfield. Jim was the only successful fisher on Saturday. Had a terrific time meeting a couple of the guys. Thanks for the fishing tips and the Corona, too, Dean! Look forward to the next.
