I hooked myself past the barb for the first time ever today. Got a size 10 wet hook in the base of my finger. It was a dangling dropper fly that was still tied to the top fly that was hooked on the drying patch on my chest pack. Though though whole deal didn't hurt that bad, its pretty gruesome feeling when you give it a tug and it just won't budge. I was forced to push it all the way through. Unfortunately, I didn't have anything to cut the hook with, and hemostats proved useless for pinching dwon the barb. I was finally able to crush the barb enough with my clippers to pull it back trough and out the original entry hole (that one hurt a little more, and produced a remorkable large amount of blood).
The lessons learned- 1) crimp your barbs 2) carry a leatherman or small pliers with a cutting tool in your vest/pack (or at leat in your vehicle) and 3) clean up your drying patch every now and then.

Jeff,
This has happened to me with size 2 to size 18 hooks.
I am in awe that you pushed it all the way through though. That musta been painful. This has happened to me so many times the I figured out how to get the barb out while still up.
You need to push the hook in and down, and usually it slides right out pain free LOL. I will try and find the diagram I learned that trick from. But you shouldn't of had to push it all the way through HAHA. THAT SUCKS!

Could be worse! Liberman took one in the skull! That's a good point though, Jeff. We should all carry a pair of dikes in our vests along with some basic first aid stuff.

Jeff,
2/0 in the skull due to lots of wind for salmon in Alaska...I don't reccomend the experience. Lots of blood from such a tiny hole...and yes, it was in my skull. My hat was pinned to my head.

i feel your pain... well... except for the hook in the skull thing, ouch!!!, time for a helmet ;D same deal though, the results of my less than careful handling of a dropper rig with a nice sized brown thrashing about on the bottom nymph.
