Hi All, I am new to this board and will soon be new to the area--I move up to Amherst later this summer to go to grad school. In the meantime, though, I will be up that way this Monday to look at places to live and thought I might try to sneak out to the Deerfield for a bit. Any advice on when to go and what might be going on bug-wise? I can get out either in the morning or later in the afternoon. I imagine I will try to go to the nearest c&r section to amherst/91 as my time will be limited. I gather that it is best to check the water release schedule--can anyone tell me where to do this? And whether I want to fish when they are releasing or holding water. Thanks for your help, Brian

Brian, you can check out www.zoaroutdoor.com/schedule.htm for some links to Deerfield flows. The C&R section is aobut 45-60 minutes from Amherst. There is decent fishing a little closer to Amherst in S. Deerfield on the lower Deerfield river along Stillwater road. There is a pullout under the Rt. 91 bridge. I've fished from the bridge to about 200 yards downstream. I have also seen people fishing the runs above the bridge. Be careful- it is big water. This is not a secret spot (there aren't many on the deerfield), so there will probably be others around. If it's warm enough, tubers might be floating by. I'm not sure about the hatches, but expect the usual early season mayflies (hendricksons?), as well as caddis. What are you studying at UMass. I went to grad school there (Clinical Psych) and now live in Northampton. Drop me an email if you want more advice on fishing, the area, finding an apartment, etc. Jeff

Thanks Jeff. As it turned out I had no time to fish, but I look forward to exploring the area after I move up there this summer. Looks like a lot of decent water around. I'll be entering the phd program in English, with a concentration in American studies. I will definitely drop you a line as I get closer to thinking about moving up there. Brian

Brian,
Hope you had luck finding housing. You'll have plenty of time for exploring/fishing (that is when you're not in class, TAing, working on your research, working on your advisor's research, doing your thesis/dissertation, etc.) ;D There will be enough diversion in the area to keep you busy and sane.
Jeff

So I found a place in the area and will be coming up this weekend to start the move and check out the area. I hope to fish Sat., Sun, and/or Monday. Any suggestions about places not to miss? I plan to hit the c and r sections of the deerfield but wouldn't mind exploring further. Are there any flies that you guys wouldn't be caught on the river without this time of year? I probably will fish the evenings. Thanks for any help, advice, etc.

Thanks Joe. I am really looking forward to being in the area. So I went out last Saturday and Sunday eves on the Deerfield. Not a lot seemed to happen as far as bugs til right at sunset when a nice sulphur hatch came off both nights. The first night they started releasing water right after the hatch started, which put down the fish and the bugs but Sunday they let it ride and the hatch was solid, with fish coming up to it eagerly. I found a bunch of nice rainbows over the two nights, and it was a beautiful place to fish. Looking forward to learning more about the river.
