In the past week alone, I have experienced two unpleasant situations involving posted land where I like to fish. One was with Jim Maselli up at the Salmon River and the second was at the Green River in Egremont. These two areas that we've fished for years are now posted on both sides of the river.
Last year, other access points on the Green River were also posted and the year prior, the same. Our access points are shrinking in numbers dramatically.
What can we do if anything? Who has ideas? Could our club write a polite letter to landowners for BCFF members to have permission? What do you think?

Write the letter(s). It can't hurt.
My personal experience has been that without exception, when I have asked a land owner to fish his posted property, I was granted access.

If you think it’s a problem with respect to fishing, try being a hunter….
There’s a stretch or two of the Deerfield that’s now off limits to fishing because, after 9/11, the railroad and power company posted some stretches of their property.
Access to unposted private land is a grand New England legal tradition that’s rapidly disappearing. Everyone wants to keep their little bit of Heaven to themselves. I don’t know what the answer is, but I would think tax incentives for opening up private land to hunting and fishing would help to some degree.

in maine the water can't be posted so as long as you remain within the high water marks no one can say squat. as long as there is a point either a bridge crossing or un-posted land that you can make your way to the stream you are all set to travel it's length. ponds can be more difficult unless you are in the habit of skydiving with your fishing gear and then getting airlifted out by chopper.
we had the same 9/11 issues here at some of the dams that are popular trout holding waters but enough fishermen made a stink that sappi (owner of the dams in question) lightened up on anglers. there are still armed security guys that drive by on occasion but they just wave and go on their way.
i've had the same experience as mark in that most folks have no problem at all granting access to their posted land, generally they just want to know who's out there.
you can also call or write to your politicians and other government officials, can't hurt.

My favorite piece of water here, on the Ipswich R. is now posted It's taken away my ambition to even go. I plan on getting a salt water set up this year and start going after stripers on the fly, but it won't be the same.
