Orvis Days - BCFF trip w/fishing

How about some fishing and a demo at Orvis??? Who's interested?

CTROY posted the weblink for Orvis days previously. I would consider driving to VT for some of the Orvis talks/guest speakers, etc. and doing some fishing on the Battenkill. Orvis days is this coming Sat. and Sun. 5/5 and 5/6. My schedule is a little up in the air as of now, but I would consider driving up with some BCFF members or meeting up there either day potentially.

Any interest? Please reply and let me know.

I'd be down for one of the days as I'll be up this weekend. But is there supposed to be a correction on those dates??

I'm game for a ride up on Sunday but I'm not sure that there are seminars, demos, etc., on those dates. I thought those were last weekend. I guess we need to check Orvis on that.

Forrest Hamer—13-year-old graduate of the Orvis Manchester fly-tying class will demonstrate his skills.
11AM Thomas Ames Jr., author of Fish Bugs and Hatch Guide for New England Streams will present “Caddisflies and how to match them.”
NOON Orvis Fly Fishing School presents the Orvis Progressive Casting Method on the Orvis pond.
1PM Richard Conant will cover what it takes to rig your kayak for fly fishing.
2PM Enter our fly-tying contest: tie your best Wooly Bugger—while blindfolded.

Those are some good guest speakers. I know Paul and have talked to to him about being a guest speaker for us. He wrote one of my favorite all time books.

Bob Mead is an awesome tyer and I've spoke with him a few times also, if you went, I hope he told the Mosquito story.

When I'm not a high school teacher in New York, I work at Orvis in Manchester. Paul and Bob are both great guys. We've had them up for Orvis Days the past few years now. There aren't any two tyers who are more talented or friendly.

Paul has expressed an interest in setting up a class for those interested in tying Atlantics. Any interest out there? We were thinking of possibly setting something up for the fall.

As far as Orvis Days goes ... the highlight for me is always the kids event on Sunday. My partner and I take 10 or 12 kids through the tying of a simple fly, move them out to the stream bordering Orvis' property to show them how to sample insect populations using a seine, and then tie everybody into at least one of the brutes on the pond. One young lady caught a rainbow of roughly 15-16 pounds that was longer than she was tall. I think the parents enjoy the event as much as the kids.

If you're in the store over the summer make sure to say hello. I'm the tall, gruesome looking SOB back in fishing.

Tying atlantics would be a great asset and skill to learn. Keep us updated on this class as I would set some time aside for this.

Thats just awesome that you do that. I only wish that I was introduced to this sport the way you do for kids. Especially letting them hook into a 15 pound rainbow. Thats not fair!
