Here is a little article I wrote a number of years ago. I thought you might enjoy.
It’s funny how one of America’s favorite past times fishing is similar to motocross. How the truth can be stretched a little. I caught a fish this BIG! Or did you see the BIG AIR I caught off of that jump! In reality the fish was only this big and you only got this much air. But that’s not all that is the same. Take for instance your secret fishing hole. There is not many of these so you guard them, not sharing them with know one in fear that the word may get out and the fishing hole would be lost. It is know different then your little practice area. Only a select few know because god forbid if the word got out! The next time you would go their there could be 50 bikes and quads then the neighbors would complain and it would be shut down. Your favorite line setup on your fishing pole, you know the one your grandfather showed you. If everyone was using it their would be know fish left. No different then the Motor Mods and suspension setup. If everyone had the same setup where would your edge come from? Secretes are Secretes….. Why would you want to give away your edge? I can remember many years ago before racing when I went fly fishing every Saturday morning with my buddy Dave. If you know anything about fly fishing? Fly selection is critical, they can change in a heart beat. If one of us was catching fish the other would yell “what are you using and the reply would always be the same (Grandma’s Dough Balls dipped in Sue Bee honey!)” Why give away your edge! It can change in a second. Our first year racing was know different. We saw Nicolleti riding a Lem (Dirt bike)and I asked Mr. Nicholleti what he did to make that bike so fast? He replied we just got lucky and got a fast one off the floor. Why should he give away his edge? If you are lucky enough to find a old guy to share with you his favorite fishing hole or a fast rider moving up that would share a tidbit or two, Guard them with your life, Because they are few and far between! Keep your eyes open, read between the lines. We all want some kind of edge. It doesn’t matter if it is the biggest fish or the most fish. We want to WIN! So remember the next time someone asks you what you are using reply Grandma’s Dough Balls Dipped in Sue Bee Honey.
