Hey Joe,
I keep seeing you post kudos to those who are against stocking the Battenkill, yet so far as I can recall, you’re in favor of stocking the Hoosic.
Not to put you on the spot or anything (but I’m going to), could you please tell me how you reconcile not wanting the Battenkill stocked, but promoting stocking of the Hoosic?
Thanks,
Shaun

I don't recall ever being 100% behind stocking the Hoosic. I think it was just mentioned as an option and then blown up a little. Personally, I'd like to see the Hoosic designated as a wild river just like the BK is. Just an opinion, not a plan. It's funny you bring this up though. I took over as President of the Hoosuck Chapter of TU on Tuesday night. And don't worry, stocking the Hoosic isn't the first thing on my agenda. I'm looking to get a quick and dirty website up for the chapter in the next few days with a forum on it so we can hold open discussions on projects that we can undertake.

I used to belong to the Hoosuck Chapter, but it was so…quiet…I switched to the Taconic Chapter a few years ago. Let me know when things are up and running and I’ll switch back. If you don’t mind a long-distance Member that is….

The more the merrier! I don't mind a long distance member at all. I was checking the roster yesterday and there's a member from Dallas on there. Once I get the website up I'll post more stuff on meeting dates and plans. I don't want to post to much here about it. I want to take the "Fly Fishing Elitist" stereotype out of TU and get all area fishermen involved.

Which would you recommend for eatin' fish? I have a taste for trout and have been told previously to avoid the Hoosic.

PCB contamination.... Personally, I find brown trout to be the best tasting, although nothing beats a streamside fry of little brookies.

Nothing wrong with a stocked river. Nothing wrong with a wild river. I like 'em both and fish 'em both. But they are different, and I think we should have both kinds. My objection to stocking the Battenkill is based on it's history of 30+ years as a wild stream. In that time the fish have evolved a set of genes and instincts that make them perfectly adapted to the river. And they are capable of producing more offspring than the river can support. Why would we trash such an exquisite natural resource? You can eat fish from the Battenkill in NY as long as you catch them downstream from the Eagleville bridge. Sad to say but it is generally held that most fish in the North East will contain some mercury. It comes with the acid rain from the smokestacks in the mid-west. But as long as you limit consumption to whatever the state of NY says, and are not pregnant, and so on -- . Get a hold of a topo map of some hill country that is within reasonable driving distance. Anyplace you see a little blue line snaking off , up the mountainside, there, is potential brookie water. Maybe even beaver ponds. Expect small fish, 7 inches might be the big one, but they will be some of the most beautiful fish you will ever see. Where ever there is a lot of pine or hemlock duff in the water, they can be almost black with flashes of gold and red. AgMD

Seems like this would go hand-in-hand with making the river wild/CnR. Why stock it if you can't eat the fish?

We're not making any plans to stock it.

Please don't push to stock Hoosic. VT is already doing it and its a waste of money. Those fish should be for places lacking natural reproduction.
And yes, I would not eat any fish from the Hoosic drainage downstream from N. Adams to the Hudson. Unless you enjoy strange cancers and a short life.
