While driving down 183 from Stockbridge last night towards GB past the Housy catch and release section at about 8:40pm, I noticed tons of big summer bugs in the air over the water in the section upstream before the turn where the pump station is. I quickly called my wife and let her know I'd be home 30 minutes later.
By the time I got strung up and got to a rock on the side of the river where I could comfortably roll-cast from, it was 8:50pm (I got set up pretty fast since I was excited). After a few casts and no action, I thought to change from the emerger to a dry caddis. As soon as I snipped off the emerger, I knew I had made a mistake. I couldn't thread the size 6x tippet on the size 14 dry. It was too dark already. After literally 5 minutes of panic and getting eaten alive from mosquito's, I actually successfully threaded and tied the fly on...until I went to snip the tag end...and I accidentally snipped the line I just tied! d**n! I was pissed as fish were rising all over the place right in front of me.
I quickly ran back to the car and struggled to get the fly on my line in the interior light of the car. Now, with fly on at 9:05pm and it's really dark, I went back out there and caught one on my second cast. It was a nice smallie. While I was hoping for an evening feeding brown, at least I did not get skunked after all that.

Have you seen the Hat Eyes set up? I use it and it's great for tying the flies on. It's heavy duty and you can get different lenses. There is another company that makes them with a light built in! Even if you don't wear glasses it is a great help. By the way whats wrong with clipping off the fly? I do it all the time

Picked up one of those 'threader' fly boxes at the TU banquet but haven't tried it yet. I always carry several flashlights, favorite for fishing is a mini-Maglite with the yellow/amber lens. I love fishing at dusk, but fly changes are a b*tch.

A mini mag lite is ALWAYS in my vest. I never know when things will be just too good to leave before it gets really dark. If I am planning on fishing in the dark I add another mini and an extra set of batt. AgMD
