With the rivers so high I couldn't fish yesterday so I brought my 4 year old daughter out for a couple of hours. I carried the canoe about a quarter mile to a local pond. She enjoyed the canoe ride and we cought about 20 bluegills. I cast and she reels in the popper, she caught a 11 inch largemouth that almost ripped the rod from her hands!! There's alot to be said about quality time with the kids.

Thats why I love to take my 10 yr old niece fly fishing. I helped her tie a GRHE. She has always fished for bass up at her camp in NH. But anyone can catch bass with minnows ;D. If the water ever comes down I plan to get the fly rod in her hands again. The last time we went was after she won a figure skating competition. I told her it was getting late but she still wanted to go . By the way the spot we were at was the same spot that the person from Topsfield drowned after leaving their jeep during the flood.

A while back was watching a program called, I think, Northeast Outdoor Journal on NECN where the host was fishing for brook trout in Labrador with a very large mouse-pattern fly. He was catching 4-5 pound fish hand over fist. The trout were fighting each other to get at the mouse-fly.
I also remember that in pre-spinning gear days there were several bait casting plugs that imitated mice and took largemouths on the surface.

I love hearing stories about kids getting excited from fishing. Keep up the good work you two!
+10 Karma for both of you for taking a kid fishing!

The Northeast Journal is my favorite outdoor show if it's the same one you mention. Is the host name Harry Vanda something? (sp?) He dose a lot of fishing / hunting north of our border but I don't hold it against him! I need to take my nephew to Montreal for hockey tournaments so I'm guilty too! LOL

Yep, that's the one. Haven't seen the show in a while. I liked it because unlike most fishing/hunting on Cable TV it featured stuff from our neck of the woods.
The only programs from OLN or ESPN that featured local activity dealt with the Housatonic and the Farmington in CT. The one on the Housy ran a few years back and they never fished the Housy because of high water and instead fished some nearby smaller brooks. I missed the one on the Farmington, which ran in March when I was in Florida.

NESN have been bouncing the show around. I loved when it was on Sunday's at 9pm. Now it's on at times like Friday's at 3pm. Who can watch it at that time? I only saw it because of the rain. NESN = Don't mess with Charlie Moore
