I’m notorious among my friends for my nasty spills, tumbles, and mishaps while fishing. In fact, sometimes I think they’re secretly keeping an eye peeled in expectation of my next imminent header….
Typically, my tumbles involve a slip on a wet rock or a root tangled around my boot. Once I managed to slip and fall into a stream so that exactly ½ my entire body, from head to foot (right arm, right leg, right side of head and torso) was soaking wet. Needless to say, my wallet was in my right back pocket that day.
Sharp stumps surrounding beaver ponds are another personal bête noire. Inevitably, several times a summer, I wind up with lacerated shins from stumbling into a lance-like stump left razor sharp by industrious beavers that was obscured by tall grass. The deerflies and leeches just love the fresh blood trickling down my shin all afternoon.
Remarkably, I’ve never impaled myself with a fly, broken a bone, or really damaged my gear as a result of any crash & burn incident.
I think the worst accident I’ve ever had fishing was two summers ago when I slipped on a wet rock, and watched my bamboo rod and brand new Hardy Bougle Mk IV reel tumble to the stream far below, clattering and bouncing on large boulders all the way down. With my heart in my throat, I scrambled down the rocks and plunged my arm into the narrow chute of gushing water it had disappeared into. Thankfully, my desperately grasping fingers latched onto the rod, and I was able to haul my sopping gear back into the atmosphere. Remarkably, the only physical damage was one small “ding” on the reel. But, my beard sprouted a grey hair soon thereafter….
And you? What mishaps have you suffered through while fishing?
