I just checked the USGS flow data and it is now 250 cfs above the all time high as measured from the Charlemont site.
Is this power "needs" related or being done to lower the level above the dam, due to all the recent rains?

Dollars, plain and simple. Crabapple and Zoar outfitters are growing by leaps and bounds, the river is crawling with kayakers from dawn till dusk, and the riverbed has already been scoured clean, rendering a once great trout river essentially a put and take operation. The interests of the kayakers reign supreme, and the river flows cater to them.

Shaun: Please tell me that you don't speak from a place of knowledge on this. Is there any chance that they'll reduce the flows at sometime this week? I'm wanting to fish it on Friday. If not, looks like the Housy will be getting my attention. I can't believe how f'd up this situation is! Mark

I think it's an all time high for this time of year. I believe I've seen it higher than this during spring run-off.
We've had a lot of rain lately..... I used to think the rafting companies had influance over the water flows but now believe it to be power generation. The rafting companies are just getting the benefit of that need.
If we don't get a lot more rain by weeks end the flow should be back to normal by then.

A friend of mine works for Trans Canada and I can confirm what Jim says. The rafting companies really don't have any say in it. Turning on those generators is a big deal.
I've got to admit, my opinion of the Deerfield had really changed this year. Where else can you go around here in August and have good trout fishing.

The rafting companies really don't have any say in it. That’s not true Joe. There is a negotiated agreement (Deerfield Settlement Agreement) with the power company whereby the rafters are guaranteed certain flows….
